Jaron, hand held are laser which is 'instant on', the laser will only emit a signal your radar can detect when it has arleady been fired at your car. if the cop doesnt pull the trigger, the detector wont go off.

also with cop cars, you'll only get a reading if they have a unit in their car and it is on, which i think is nromally only country cops and highway patrol, although one of the boys in blue on the forum might enlighten us if they wish

They mustn't have fired it at me then. You would think I would be the first to get shot at?????
Not that it matters coz as soon as the detector goes off your done anyway with the hand held.

Anyone know if the popo are using "POP" band in WA now? My Escort Passport 8500 X50 detects this band as well but have not had it go off yet. Supposedly the new technology they are using for hand held in USA. X band is obviously the one to turn off, the K and KA are the worry.

yes pop is being used by cops here, older Bels can get an upgrade for it. I have been driving with cops behind me in the wrx and pop will go off every few seconds.

Don't make my mistake, driving in the CV8 past roadworks, K band goes nuts, I get a Highway work crews ahead alarm... keeps beeping K band.... I floor it... K band goes nuts but ahhh too late... Highway patrol have me coming around the corner.

As Stace said, it make a noise slow the fuck down. if its quiet your cool, unless they check speed your sorry ass

Yeah but your looking at it the wrong way. All radar and laser are detecte when the signal reaches the car. The difference is radar will bounce off shit, the car in front of you for instance, and laser will not bounce. Laser also has a very small area, so if they aim at the car in front your detector will not go off, in fact if they aim at your license plate your detector will not go off!

generally laser is only true to about 200-500m from what i remember so chances are you will see the cop with the handheld as well as have your radar go off. Your visual warning is your best bet with laser.

As for POP surprised its being used in WA. its still not 100% succesful and accurate in the US and the guidelines for POP state that the gun must transmit once ala laser, and then do a full transmit ala K band highway patrol to confirm the reading.

So as it stands currently they shouldnt be able to prosecute you on a pop reading alone.

Bel 990 has front and rear laser sensors. From my experience the detector activates every known time I have been lit up. I suspect any minor scratches on the gun lens will ensure enough signal is spread around to detect. With a hand held laser, you may get some warning but usually its game set and match. You can try with slimline plates to reduce the target reflection area but its grasping at straws. And good luck spotting a laser radar operator at over 200m! You probably have a better chance of getting it thrown out of court with a so called "Expert Witness".

I have the Stealth Ninja G3 it can pickup Laser but like they say if its a laser handheld then they have your speed at the same time as the detector goes mental, there is no signal strength with Laser unlike K n Ka bands its off or full on. Some sets of traffic lights use laser to scan for cars to help prevent sudden breaking when the lights change to amber. Corner of Tonkin Hwy & Collier Rd is a prime example.
