afm/ maf sensor swapping

My gf8 wrx 98 ej20 engine is in need of a new turbo..... I'll cut long story short and show you my fourm and see if u can answer the final question

So another question on this forum I want to ask here

I need help to find out witch colour afm i need because I have a no colour label on my afm sensor due to a mechanic changing my original one and he did put in one with no colour it's all black plastic over it....

Now from my understanding you shouldn't just change a green labeld afm to a orange or purple and so on colours afm sensors and drive off thinking it's all good now because it's a brand new afm....why because some afm have different wires like 3 wiers as opposed to 4 or 5 wires and different colour wires going into the afm and some are bigger in diameter and letting through more air and giving different reading values to the ecu.....

But from my understanding you can get another coloured Afm as long as.....
It's in the current years of your Subaru like for example mines 98....I can probably get away with 99 and 97 and of course 98 I can use.....
Also it has to have the same amount of wires going into the afm sensor.... Like for example I have 3 wires into my plug to go into the afm.... Some have 5 wires so I can't use that afm i think the other 2 wires might be something like air temperature and some other unique reading for that ecu to work with witch mine never had for example .....

Also the main reason why I think you can't just change the afm because u need it tuned for your ecu?

But my long story LOL short question is.... Can i use another afm if i tune my ecu to read that afm?

What ECU are you running?

What Turbo are you running?

The MAF isn't a power sapping restriction - you only run into problems with them when you are flowing more air than they can read (usually over 350hp), so I have no idea what makes you think you need a bigger or different MAF??

If you are running a factory ECU then you MUST run the original MAF - You cannot change one type out for another, the ECU is calibrated to what ever MAF was factory fitted.

Which is: 22680AA280 - a hotwire type MAF

The 99 maf is the problematic hot film type & cannot be interchanged.

The only time you can change one type for another is if you have an aftermarket ECU (i.e a power FC & fit a Nissan Z32 MAF for better resolution & reliability) and even then there's more to it than simply swapping the MAF's over, you need to remap the entire airflow curve from scratch.

Ignore this advice & you will destroy your motor - no if's, no buts!

Romraider can rescale mafs but I have never done it.

Fire a question to Carberry and check what he says to fix the issue.
