Default Timing belt arrived arrived wound up in small package.

Hi guys,

Just after some advice on what to do about this timing belt that I received.

I ordered a timing belt kit and it come in a small box for a LED down light and the belt appears to have been wound very tightly.

When reading tutorials on changing the timing belt it was made very clear not to bend the belt more than the circumference of the pulley or it can snap the fibreglass cords and damage the timing belt permanently.

There is a company that sells timing belts and pulleys giving detail about it here as well: Timing Belt Handling & Storage | Pfeifer Industries

Just wondering if you guys think its reason for replacement as potentially its a engine rebuild or changeover on the line.

Thanks for any advice.

Just a update, I took the belt out of the box to inspect it.

Keys for size reference to see how tightly its wound.

A middle section of the belt when loosely looped.

One of the sections that was bent tightly, has a permanent kink either due to bent or broken cords perhaps?

I would send it back if you can and ask for a refund. That kink is now a point of weakness. If they give you a refund just head down to your local Subaru dealership and one from there. I would only go genuine or Gates racing for high hp engines.

Thanks for the advice, this one is genuine (a full kit) but its a shame they skimped on packaging and tried to cram it all in a tiny box perhaps to save a few bucks on postage.

Like I said see if you can get a refund. Once you show them the photos I'm sure they'll give you your money back. I'm always skeptical when something I've ordered doesn't come in the original box.

I just send them the pictures above and some links to media showing failure due to improper handling timing belts (bent like this), I also asked for a replacement in the original packaging after reading your comment.

Hopefully they will take care of it without any drama.

Where did you buy it from? What brand?

Personally, I don't think it would make much difference. But if you paid good money for it, I would be in contact with the supplier (by email) with photo evidence etc of the packaging and product. That way you can cover yourself if anything went wrong.

Its a genuine Subaru part from Rising Sun Subaru.

They replied to the email saying they will send a replacement tomorrow.

I asked for them to send it in the original packaging, so hopefully they will.
