I have just started cleaning and inspecting the old valves from my engine. Like Dazs, they were the SuperTech valves. And like Dazs, they also had hairline cracks forming.
Just thought i would bump this thread to highlight that it is not an isolated incident. Luckily for me, it hasnt gotten bad enough that the valves snapped and destroyed everything like Daz. But as you can see from the photos, the potential was there. Who knows how much longer they would have lasted if my motor had not spun a bearing instead. Im just putting this out there so that hopefully it doesnt cost anyone else an expensive race motor. I sure as shit wont be buying Supertech again. And i would strongly advise otheres to also consider this. I dont know what to do if they are already inside a motor you have. But, it certainly does have potential to cost you big time if one does let go. These valves were purchased around 2011/2012. And have been in the motor since then. The motor has done relatively few KMs. But has seen a bit of motorsport use. Super tech valve by bram biesiekierski, on Flickr

Wow, makes me feel a bit better about mine proof it wasn't a build issue then.
How many Kms had these done Bram? I'm glad you caught it in time. My failure was catastrophic!

First set did 10k this set did almost 20k. Looks like they have a shelf life.

Quite possible.
A few interesting points to note. It only appears to be intake valves. I cant see the same cracking on any of the exhausts. All 8 intake valves had the cracks. But 4 from one head were alot worse than the 4 from the other head. I dont know if it affects things. But my valve guides were not replaced when the valves were fitted. I donk know for sure, But I dont think the seats were cut, or even lapped at the time of fitting the valves? There are no piston to valve witness marks on any of the pistons. EXCEPT the piston from the cylinder that had the rod bearing failure. And im certain this would be as a direct result of the rod bearing being munched, alloying the piston to touch one of the valves. Only one valve touched. And all 7 other intak valve recess in the pistons appear perfect. The car did from time to time bash limiter.

Mine were all inlet valves too. My exhaust valves are all inconel. My guides were oem. Seats weren't cut but valves were all lapped in properly

Hey all,
Thought I'd better update as it's been a while. A fair bit has happened since the engine shat itself due to the valve issue. Not much of that was on the car. After the failure I lost complete interest in the bloody thing and just parked it in the garage and forgot about it. 18 months ago I moved house and put the car in the garage in the new house and continued to ignore its existence. I contemplated starting work on it and then had a fairly major accident whilst building some stables at the new house for the wife. I fell off a roof and shattered both of my shoulders. I'm now equipped with some upgrades Left Right 12 months on and lots of surgery and lots of physio later I'm now just about fully recovered although my days of playing tennis/squash are numbered not that i did much of that anyway. So now I'm able to again I thought I better make a start on the car. The new house came with a triple garage but for some reason the previous owner only concreted half of the floor so that was the first thing to be addressed. I then needed to put some lighting in and a few coats of paint to make it a suitable work space. With the garage sorted it was time to make a start on the car. Now as you know I don't do things by halves and this is no exception. What's the plan I hear you ask? Well now the car is not my daily anymore I can approach things a little differently this time round. One thing is for sure... This will be the best car I've ever built. It won't be a quick moving project this time round but everything will be done meticulously and to the best of my ability. Watch this space!
