Ver 6 sti head rebuild.

Gday
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with local companies that rebuild heads.
I need my ver 6 sti heads refurbished, some port work done and also shimless buckets installed.
I am aware of ASG/maximum etc just want to know if anyone has had any other companies build heads and what their experiences have been with them.

Jacob92 04-09-2016 11:07 AM

Yea steve does awsome work set up all the clearances for my shimless buckets to my 278 cams, porting and polishing, oversize valves fitted and throats opened up to match, the pic with valves only in one size was a repair he did after my valve let go,
5 angle intake grind and 3 angle exhaust with rounded edges...

Tell him you seen pics of jacobs forester heads he will know what ones .. im mates with diesel heads bloke there and know steve fairly well

Neil Herbert at The Engine Shop in Canning Vale knows his Subaru heads, has done a couple pairs for me now (both V6 STI), has his own GC8 race car, does heaps of performance work on Subaru motors. Definitely worth having a chat to him.

I got a good deal on machine work.. mates rates ;)

About $4500 inc buying cams, valves, guides, stem seals, spec c heads, then all the machine work on top of that

Well the first time round then another service for new motor and then reapirs on top of that hahaha

VUSSUTE 04-09-2016 01:49 PM

Well i already have the cams. I just need new springs, valve and retainers. Also shimless bucket conversion and a port tidy up.. not needed it flow benched

VUSSUTE 05-09-2016 04:37 PM

Im a little frustrated to say the least. I ordered a full forged long motor to be built, with reconditioned heads, porting and camshafts from an interstate company that will remain anonymous.

I wasnt able to send my own heads as I didnt want to remove them from my car (its a daily). I asked them to source V6 sti heads (or GD heads) as they were going to be converted to shimless buckets and have aftermarket camshafts anyway.

Anyway, when I received the motor, it was only a short motor with other parts not fitted (waterpump, oil pump, gaskets, ARP head studs, timing gear etc).
They claimed they could not find any suitable heads to rebuild and fit.

The problem is now, not a lot of subaru performance shops in Perth want to touch the motor for obvious reasons, (responsibility).

Im obviously going to have to get my heads removed, rebuilt and fitted to my built short block. Its going to be a fair bit more labor than my original plan of just fitting a built engine.

:(

Source a set of 04/05 wrx heads they are shimless buckets and big port unlike the gc or gd sti can easyily delete avcs if not required or hook it up to ecu and use it to ur advantage

I just got offered a set of heads from a 04 WRX today from a work colleague.
Do you know if these flow just as good as the V6 STi heads?

Pic of the heads attached if you can confirm they are the big port heads.

nick73 05-09-2016 08:23 PM

Ask one of these performance shops to split your block and check all the clearances etc and put it back together, then move on to the heads etc.

Yes it will suck paying for it twice but that should be enough piece of mind for them to move forward with the build.

Did the engine builder send you the clearance numbers with the block. I was told that is how I will receive my block when it gets here, sometime this millennium....

Who is the engine builder? PM me if you don't want to go public.

Well, got the heads. They are in very good condition. Will be sent off for rebuild next week.
Also gave the covers a paintjob in ceramic paint. I recon these will set the engine off quite well in the engine bay.

Not sure if its worth fitting oversized valves or not. I am aiming for 250 - 280kw on pump fuel on a 2.1L. Any suggestions?

Top-Deck 09-09-2016 02:31 PM

That paint-job looks really clear mate!

Taktics 09-09-2016 06:08 PM

I inspected my v6 heads today and 3 out of the 4 spark plugs holes have hair line cracks around them.

My kelford non Avcs 272 cams/springs/retainers are due to arrive on Tuesday. I think I'll be goin down the same road as VUSSUTE.

Question: Will I be able to run the non Avcs cams/springs/retainers in the 04wrx heads given they are shimless buckets?

I also have 1mm oversize ferrea valves to suit my v6 heads. Will I be able to whack them into the 04 wrx heads?

Is this a problem with just the STI heads, or also for WRX heads?

And is it just the 99/00 heads that suffer from this cracking, or is it all EJ20/25
heads??

deejw 09-09-2016 07:03 PM

Paint looks fantastic. What headers are those?

VUSSUTE 10-09-2016 09:42 AM

They ultrex headers. They are getting ceramic coated and wrapped on monday so wont look as special.

Wildbill 10-09-2016 10:19 AM

we send our heads to tony knight in SA, he has a CNC profile, so it doesn't make any diff on head you use, that is later than 99 heads.
then you throw the cams, bigger valves and valve spring to suit.
we also port match the intakes and exhaust
not a cheap exercise but good flow for making plenty of HP.
I AM squeezing some 630hp and 750nm of tugging, so the heads must be doing something right.
and still looking for more.....its a drug.....and its addictive....ask Justin..

Taktics 10-09-2016 02:19 PM

Thanks for the info mate, but i would be having the head work done locally

I think ive tracked another set of v6 heads down. Ill be cleaning them up on monday to see if there is any cracks in this set.

The number stamps on the heads are exactly the same as the one i took off my v6. Is this enough to go on to say that they are v6 heads?

Also say if newer heads are used, does v6 intake manifold line up or would have to go GD styles?

Beauty, was hoping not have to swap manifolds.

Original heads

Sourced heads

Number stamps on:

Original heads RH C 009 & LH C 008

Sourced heads RH C 008 & LH C 008

Physically I can't really see any difference. Will clean them up Monday for further look

Can anyone shed some lights on the numbers?

Correct me if I'm wrong but cant the cracks be welded up? Or is it the expense that is the killer?

Looks like the source set has a slight crack in it.

Here's photos of the cams on the sourced heads

I've done some homework and seems that the 272 non Avcs kelford cams are best to convert to shimless buckets along with the machining require to allow bucket/Spring travel. So the best bet is going 01-05sti shimless bucket heads and delete the Avcs. Set clearance and see if I require new buckets if it doesn't meet clearance.

Anyone got a 01-05 Sti heads that are for sale? [emoji848][emoji28][emoji6]

I think it can be done, and cost probably not an issue. It's more of chasing decent power and whacking a fair amount of boost but having thoughts of that crack/cracks getting bigger and destroying the bottom end if a seat drops. [emoji33]
