06 STi - The Real figures

Ok just let me get this straight... im not trying to start a massive debate over the differences between one dynos figures compared to the other.

I wanted to share my experiences to help put some fact to the myth that has been built up on the 06 STi's and their "self destructive" tendencies when modified without an aftermarket ECU or flash. Like many other 06 STi owners i was concerned with modifying the car after certain workshops had indicated that simple intake and exhaust mods could cause the car to run lean and in some cases "self destruct". I was faced with the dilemma where threre were limited options in regards to fully programmable ecu's for the 06 due to the recently released fly by wire feature and i was not too keen on other options such as ECUTek or UTEC. So to be on the safe side i decided to go for the full turbo back zorst and intake (perrin silicon and cold air intake) and give the car a run on the dyno to check mixtures... this is what i found.

Just to note the car was dynoed in 4th gear and i gave the std ecu sufficient time to re-learn and possibly compensate for the above mods..

As you can all see the figures speak for themselves... AFR's in the low to mid 10's which is very safe and power peaking at 200.6Kw's @16psi. Some may say that the power figures are a little unrealistic but i have a direct comparison to another 06 STi that run before me (TBE, ECUTek, fuel pump) and dynoed 20kw's lower... Go figure... Belive me tho after owning other 200+kw rexs i can def say that the seat of the pants dyno is confirming those figures. I have noticed a little overboosting in third which will be sorted with an EBC and so far thats the only negative outcome.

Anyways im not trying to say that all the 06 STi owners out there are going to pull identical figures to me with the same mods so please before taking this as gospel do a power run to confirm... DONT BELIVE EVERYTHING YOU READ FELLAS!!

Im out...

nice, its running VERY rich.
Should have been done in 5th though.

what rpm's u hitting full-boost at ?

Intra 24-08-2006 10:28 PM

Its great to see that you did a power run.. now all those graphs sure are pretty.. but the real important thing here is... is it detonating?

did you actually have some sort of knock sensor amp or headphones on to listen for det?

LegacyGT 24-08-2006 11:24 PM

they prolly they did pete.

the great "ant" works at xspeed (new flava of the month in tuning).

v5 sti 24-08-2006 11:53 PM

Actually they didnt... I asked Ant if he was gonna use em as i saw AJ tune the ole V5 with them and he said no.

jEstEr? 24-08-2006 11:58 PM

i kinda find 800nm hard to swallow too

LegacyGT 25-08-2006 12:04 AM
Actually they didnt... I asked Ant if he was gonna use em as i saw AJ tune the ole V5 with them and he said no.
well then i guess xspeed aint so recommended after all!?

800nm if from 2.5L powa! engine of the year!

waxdass 25-08-2006 12:18 AM

isnt it 380nm...

top ones are kw.. bottom ones are nm ?

before and after comparison?

LegacyGT 25-08-2006 12:21 AM

your prolly right.

800nm is like US figures

Tode is on the money!

Nice write up champ... good to see that your going against the norm and trying things for yourself.

After going to see Sean last night at the Shed, I'm going to take a similar route, and if it becomes problematic, I'll then have a look at the reflash options. Same idea though, I'm going to do all of my mods, then dyno it and see how it goes. I'll let you know how I go.

:)

v5 sti 25-08-2006 07:58 AM

Boys.. just to clear it up the dashed line is the y-axis on the right hand side... hence torque is bout 380Nm not 800Nm... i wish.

stinga 25-08-2006 08:37 AM

Nice work Jas, I'm not far behind you and I think we may see some very impressive numbers from Jaron this week.....

If you are going to the effort of fitting aftermarket parts, etc, why sell yourself short and not go for some form of re-tune at the same time to get the most out of your car?

You might see the glass as half-full, i see it as half empty without ecu/tune to match mods - you've invested $65K+ to date, why not got a bit further.

Image what the car would be like fully tuned @ 18psi, AFR @ 11.8.

stinga 25-08-2006 10:08 AM

Fred, he is waiting for the Autronic to come out, I think the point he is trying to make is that these things are relatively safe with minor mods, not optimised but not bad either.

BLUES 25-08-2006 10:11 AM

OK - didn't realise that - Jase only mentions EBC to control over-boosting.

v5 sti 25-08-2006 10:31 AM

Yer Fred ive been talking to Al a fair bit about this topic lately so his full bottle.. or should i say full glass.. ;-)

I have been in contact with Autronic and am currently waiting on an ecu to be released for the 06. As Al did say this was only done to demonstrate that the car is indeed within a safe working limit without an ecu and minor mods. The only remedial measure that i am taking to provide a little more piece of mind is to fit a EBC to ensure that a sudden overboost wont cause any damage. The way i thought about it was that id prob invest in a 3 port solenoid once i put the ECU in anyways so why not spend a little extra now a get something that will see my through until that time i was to fit the ECU and will prob work better.

jEstEr? 25-08-2006 11:13 AM

yeah my bad, read the graph wrong like a newb. Nice figured regardless, and as we always say, a dyno is a tool not the be-all and end-all of a cars performance. but i bet she goes 'ard :)

would be pretty cool to see the graph with rpm on the bottom isntead of road speed tho

Intra 25-08-2006 11:59 AM

Heres the other piece to the puzzle.

More then likely explains your AFR curve alot better too.

Because of the free flowing exhaust and other mods.. its pushed the LOAD points to run off the map.. thus your 10ish AFR area's.

You'll find that its now running richer then normal as you're operating outside the "viewable" control area for the ECU..

Have fun...

Yeh mate pick her up at 4pm can't wait!!! So looking forward to my new ride, she is going to piss!

stinga 25-08-2006 12:11 PM

Did they give an Indication to KW?

Didn't ask mate, looking forward to the surprise! I will post up graphs and pics this arvo. PUMPED!

American Dave 25-08-2006 03:32 PM

Nice thread and post Jason. It's reassuring to know and it sounded bloody awesome on the dyno last saturday!

v5 sti 25-08-2006 04:00 PM

Thanks Dave... Didnt really notice the sound i was too busy listening out for the BANG... ahah. Nah seriously the silicon intake is one of the best mods IMHO not just for performance but for intake note as well... thats if u like that kind of thing.
