As this thread seems to be deviating on a tangent, I will get back to the OP's original question and related quotes.
1. If you're choosing between a MY 98 and MY99/00 (remembering that MY99 started in August/September 1998), the 99/00 has a fair bit more going for it, so that would be the best choice
2. If you take the advice and try to find an MY94 (or similar), remember that the ones worth money as collectables are unmolested originals. So if you bought one, you would need to leave it that way (ie unmodified) to secure its value.
3. The MRT website has a pretty good rundown of the history of WRX/STI's...it's worth a look.

MY99/00 has the appeal of being the most refined of the GC8 run - had the revised bumper and grill, crystal headlights, EJ205/EJ207 engine, front and passenger airbags, dark blue interior trim with red accents (or dark blue with grey accents for MY00 wagon), 4 pot front/2 pot rear brakes. The MY00 model had colour coded sideskirts, rear skirts, mirrors, and door handles for a cleaner look.

A well kept and original STI would be the pick over a WRX. Finding one will be the kicker. We only had V5 and V6's (MY99/MY00) delivered here so anything V1-4 will be quite rare to come across.

V5/6 are between 35-50k these days online.

Haven’t seen one advertised for less than 30k for a while.
