Default 1998 MY98 vs 1999/00 MY99/00

Hey guys/girls,

I’ve tried to find online the difference between the 1998 MY98 and the 1999 MY19 and struggling really hard. All I can seem to find is the brakes have been upgraded. I’ve found a low km 1998 that I’m thinking of purchasing and keeping in cotton wool in the garage but just want to make sure I shouldn’t be holding out until I find a low on 99/00.

Any help?

Thank you

There are quite a few differences apart from the brakes (which is a very good upgrade)...for a start the standard 99 had 160 KW compared to the 98's 155, the front was entirely different and there were subtle differences to the engine internals, turbo and transmission, engine and trans mounts etc etc. Also interior differences...
Side by side you would pick a 99/00 over a 98 any day of the week. The trick is to find a good one...good luck...

Crystal lights on 99/00, 98 possibly still had 8 bolt box & EJ20, not sure about orange quarter vents on the front bumper, that could have been 97, way too long since playing with them regularly.

I'd be looking for a virgin 94, still some out there.

my99 has orange indicators on the sides and back not clear as in the my00. Keep in mind a 1998 might be a MY99, my '98 is. Model change over is start of Oct so if you want a my99 or my00 still look between Oct 1998 and Oct 2000.

I love the MY99, it's also tunable on stock ECU. M99/00 are a step up from the earlier models but they're all cool, if you find something low K's and unmolested.

MY00 Aus delivered doesn’t have any clear indicators, front or back.

Interesting I never heard of that before tell me more? Is yours one of a kind or did many my00 have orange indicators? Are the clear ones only on STi's? Do you know the build date?

p.s. IanJ I don't think you can tune the ecu's earlier than my99, you can tell if you have the electronic coil packs (if that's what they're called) mounted off center to the right rather than in the middle. However there's aways aftermarket ecu options so it doesn't really matter.

I've never seen factory clear indicators either except for the "STI" tail lights, though these were also fitted to some non turbo, lower spec cars in Japan. Clear indicators and clear indicator STI tail lights were not fitted from factory to any model in Aus (even the 22B!)

The below cars are 2000 model year (painted door handles, side skirts, and mirrors; kick-up at the top of the spoiler; first also has 6 spoke wheels).

S201 is rocking amber side indicators too
