Undecided?!?!?! on which WRX
hey ppls i have a pretty much stock wrx my00 engine wise. i have about $7000 that i would like to go towards a car. now im undecided whether
1) keep the my00 and put the money towards that on mods or 2) or sell the my00 and put the rest of the $7000 on top and buy myself a very stock wrx my03 my04. i kno obviously that the newer rexs(my03-04) r better coz there newer but id like to kno how much better they r performance wise eg(handling etc) and also comfort wise for eg smoothness. I love my rex atm but gota keep in mind its almost 7 yrs old. any thoughts appreciated. thanks RICK |
I say MY03 and 04.
prolly less Km's , little heavier.. more refined. |
each to their own. you'd be bored with stock power by now
new is always better. |
less hassles too prob. my car is in mint condition just yerr dont kno whether to make it a little quicker and make it look pretty or buy a my03-04 and do things to it later on
|
yeh I would have to agree you wont get your money back on the mods and with the 03/04 you will have a newer car which is always nicer in my opinion. Also go testdrive one and see what u think.
|
there is only 1 reason for you to keep or buy the GC8, thats if you really really really like that shape.
|
If it was me I would spend the money on the car you have now. Not on looks, but on performance. Partly because I rather the look of the GC's to any of the newer models. Your not going to get a car thats any faster if you upgrade (in stock trim that is) and I'd rather spend the money making my car perform better. If your smart about how you do it 7k can make a reasonable difference to your car.
My 2c :) |
go the newer one. I just traded a my99 in and got a my05 and I like it
|
gettin some good opinions. keep them comin plz as i really dont wanna regret my decison.
|
if i was in the same situ i'd jump on a my03/04, put the 05 front on it, and be happy. sure they are heavier, but have a better tuned chassis and cost less to insure!

03-05 have the same front |
Just Imagine what $7000 on your current car can get you... Based on rough estimates...
VF34 $1000 FMIC $500 EBC $600 ECU + Tune $3000 TBE $1000 CAI $100 440cc Injectors $400 Fuel Pump $200 Thats $6900 and youd be running about 200kw ATW. |
yer but remember that things will most probaly break and u will be up for more cash :o
|
Well you could get rid of the EBC and just use the ECU to control boost and theres another $600. Do the CAI DIY and theres another $80. Get second hand 440cc, and walbro instead of bosch and theres another $130. Ebay TBE, and theres another $350.
So thats $5740 with plenty of cash left over for maintenance. |
+ labour?
|
always budget another 50% on top for labour, proper tuning and unexpected things that go wrong that will cost more (cus it always does)
|
7k soon becomes 10k :p
|
Go 03 STI, thats the one with the best interior for my liking...... Bite the bullet and buy the better base for modding in the STI.....

Bear in mind that the MY00 will still run pretty well without an ECU. Try adding these mods to the new WRX's and get the same power increases. The plus+ are AVCS, closer ratio gearbox, suretrac rear diff, 2 pot brakes on rear, stiffer chassis, more refined interior, inverted strut suspension on MY05 Minuses TGV, smaller flowing heads, smaller injectors, brant, and tighter seats for us big arsed blokes. :D ============================================================================================ Personally if you drive around 15 000km per year I really would not bother upgrading to a MY03-05. You really will miss the raw feel of the MY00 plus the bugger will be heavier. I assume you have figured in the wasted money you will incur in Stamp Duty and Transfer fees. I think the real question that you should answer is what do you want to do with the car. Daily Driver Occasional Motorsport or Hardcore Track Car. Hmmm. If I could find a cheap MY03 STi for around $25k I would buy that though. J |
Sorry forgot about the my00 having 440cc standard. All those prices I quoted would be to do most of the labour yourself bar the ECU and Tune.
|
I'd keep the MY00 and work it instead of gettin the newer 1 and startin from scratch again. You could always sell off the mods when you wanna get rid of it or just move what you can over to your next car. Also give some second hand mods a look. you'll find ppl have alot of crap to sell thats barely used or never even used, saving a bundle for even further mods. Second hand isnt so bad either, not hard finding gear that are close to new simply because the previous owner has just decided to upgrade on some parts themselves. Hope that helped mate. Good luck on your decision whatever it may be. =)

I'd ask yourself what u are planning to do, if it a weekend car and u want power i'd stick with the gc8 for pure lightness :). 7k can go a long way if u spend it right. If its a daily driver and u just want to give it a squirt every now and then, then upgrade to better interior, u have to find out what u want :).
|
Yeah.. like ch4nz said...
Go to places like rexnet for heaps of cheap secondhand stuff. Or even ebay if you know what your doin, just beware rouge sellers. |
I've always liked to 2dr sti, and said I would get one as my next car. But then I think it will probably cost $10-$15 grand more than my existing car and will be 1 year older. Imagine what $15 would turn my car into. Yes it's 6 years old but I think it is the best looking rex. The newer ones look more luxury than sporty. But that's just my 2cents worth...........
|
what he said...:)
|
keep the MY00. classic shape. possibly a collectors item at some stage
|
Keep the car, do minor mods (eg pick up good 2nd hand exhaust etc), don't spend too much and invest the balance ($4k+) in some shares and MAKE some money...you can do more mods as you go...
|
i still think new age..
If you're in the know... this is what can be achived with just simple mods.. TBE and silicone y pipe. (note no sports filter) |
As I have said before Pete - you are one very clever Asian.
Makes ecutec seem pointless. |
sorry took so long to reply wouldnt let me open this thread. My dad is a mechanic so most of the parts he could himself. my my00 has almost 140000 km which is y im a little thingy bout selling it. its a hard choice coz all of ur opinions r good. i dont wanna use it for track just have a little fun on the streets. u reckon i could pick up a decent my03-04 for bout $28000?
