Default Windscreen Wiper problems - extra power + clunk

I noticed that my windows wipers in my MY98 were going further than they were supposed to plus they made a loud clunk noise each time they returned to their normal position.

Have you ever had them off ?? Sounds like they have been taken off and put back on in the wrong position. If not try tightening the wiper motor assembely hope this helps

mine do the same thing
we think its the bushes on the wiper rods
we havent had a closer look yet but to do it you just gotta pull off the black covers under the window and have a look.

Wiper motor is located in your engine bay attached to your firewall on the right hand side. It is held on with 4 10mm bolts some times these bolts rattle a little bit loose and when the wipers are turned on the motor will actually move causing the wiper to travel a bit further than it is supposed to when the wiper returns the motor moves the other way thus the clunk may not b your prob but worth a try

sorry for the thread dredge, bud did you end up sorting this out, mine has started doing this on the weekend (in a 99 GT forester - essentially a gc8 chassis) did you take the black cover off that hides the wiper control bars? easy job to fix?

to adjust the wiper arm just loosen the nut under the the cap at the end of the wiper arm, then move the wiper arm a little. they do get stuck so just gently wobble it up and down a bit till it comes free the adjust them so they wipe in the correct area and stop at the right spot

my problem is that if you get out of the car you can grab either of the wipers and move them up & down & there seems to be like 100mm play, when the wipers are on it is hitting the trim on the 'a' piller and the black stuff between the bonnet & the windscreen, i think i nedd to pull the black strip off & see what teh control arms are doing that link the motor to the wiper arms, i suspect a worn out bush, anyone pulled one apart before?
