Radar Detectors

What is considered the best radar detector for WA conditions

Bel STi, Bel RX65 is pretty good, I have one and hasn't let me down yet. I picked mine up for $300 of ebay, brand new still in wrapper

CDR RA 17-11-2006 02:22 PM

I have had a bit of a look into it. Seems the BEL RX 65 is one of the best bank for buck ones. Can be had new for around $400. Hooked a mate up with one and used it for about a week or so and was reasonably impressed.

The new BEL STI I think performs similarly but is undetectable to RDD. So if you wanted to future proof yourself against the possible introduction of the radar laws they might be an option. Not aware that they perform significantly better than the RX65.

Think the Escort X50 (ort something along those lines) rates well also.

NVRENUF 17-11-2006 02:24 PM

vote for rx65 as well Great unit

stinga 17-11-2006 02:30 PM

I've got the Escort 8500, both this and the RX65 are made by the same company now, either one will suit you fine, comes down to which one is cheapest.

Same price now too. Think the escort is 395.

REXXX 17-11-2006 03:05 PM

i have an old Bel XR850 (same as the 990 Int, but without the Int bands), and it's worked well for me. new ones aren't fantastically better.
+ sensible driving (:)) has earned me zero speeding fines. ever.

Well, the zero speeding fine part is. ;)

I bought a new Passport 8500 X50 when in the states last month for $330. I don't speed but I don't like suprises and bills either. It has been very effective at warning about "emergency vehicles approaching". Can't recommend enough and it comes in a sweat carry case as well. It should be standard equipment on the STI :D

bel rx 65 for the winna  good bang for the buck

uglycong 20-11-2006 11:57 PM

Have a look in the quokka. Are a few guys buying them in bulk and selling them in the quokka. The whole warranty thing is a bit sus with this sort of purchase, but I guess it is not much different to EBay. If you are an ebay user and comfortanle with it, you can get them for about $350 delivered.

Passport 8500 X50...

rev9 21-11-2006 12:31 PM

thanks blaise

ULTREX 21-11-2006 03:18 PM

dont the bels have a good chance of crappen themselves and you cannot get them fixed locally? I was looking at buying a cheapy on ebay from the states but when I rang the local repairer to see if they could fix it when the dodgey code came up they reckon they could not and it had to be returned to Bel? dunno how factual that was but it put me off at the time..

Intra 21-11-2006 04:22 PM

When buying a radar detector, its always good to check out what "FIRMWARE" it is running prior to purchase. Some units have been gathering dust in storerooms. I've sent my unit back to Beltronics (in the US) twice for firmware upgrades and each time its become more sensitive and accurate for KA & K band related threats.

jezzamcbezza 21-11-2006 10:39 PM

Actually the Bel RX65 isn't that great for Multanovas. On a good day (at full power, pointing forwards) you may get a couple of hundred meters warning, but on other days you'll get about 40m warning.

The Escort X50 (passport 8500) is better at the low powered Ka Multanovas than the RX65 but if you want the best warning, get a detector that has Ka narrow filter like the Bel 966R and 975R 990i or the Valentine One in Euro mode.

I've been testing the Valentine One (Euro mode turned on) and went passed my first Multanova.

It SMASHED the other detectors for range. Easily beat the Escort X50 (which I was happy with getting between 5 and once 29 seconds warning)

I filmed the Valentine One encounter too, so I'll post the video link if anyone is interested.

I've also been testing the Bel STi which is said to have better range than the Bel RX65 but I haven't found a Multanova with it yet. Without a Ka narrow setting tho, it won't be as good as the V1 I'd imagine.

saturation 21-11-2006 10:54 PM

V1 is also suppose to be good with laser.

i guess thats why it still demands a premium over the others.

Huy 21-11-2006 10:56 PM

Have they made any progress regarding the banning of radar detectors? Not sure what's been happening since D'Orazio was booted.

I'm still wondering whether i should even buy one or not.

ImPreSiV 22-11-2006 06:49 AM

lol it has been put on the back burner coz d'orazio got kicked out, it will surface again soon, but there will be something else pop up to interrupt it.. buy one if u want one!

NVRENUF 22-11-2006 07:07 AM

Kinda silly how they want to ban them. they are more of a safty device than somthing to help u speed. If ur doing way over the limit one u deserve a ticket, two u usually havnt got time to slow down by the time the radar tells u about it.

what they good for is if ur doing maybe just over by not paying attention or changing cd , then it will warn u, and also emergency cars and workmen ahead it warns u for which is good.

Probably not point for you buddy! Gotta break the speed limits to warrant one :p

Eventually they will end up banning them though, however it just means you've got to be sneaky with your installs!

Huy 22-11-2006 10:51 AM

Haw haw, funneh :p I'll take your XR6T loving ass!!!#$@ (or not)

jezzamcbezza 22-11-2006 04:43 PM

There is a "Mori report" floating around that concludes those driving with a radar detector have fewer accidents.
