Same deal with AAMI. All legal (key word) modifications are covered under the policy up to the amount insured for the car. I.E if agreed value is $20k, that remains the same with modifications. You need to raise the agreed value of the car to cover them.

That's how it works for me.

I would be thinking that would be anything cosmetic rather than performance based.

RAC is a bit of a weird one. every time I've talked to them about modifications on my wrx they ask me to list them, which I do, then they ask me "What is the power output of the engine stock and what is it now?" and i'm like ummm...

It's clear that they're just reading from a sheet of paper because when I question them on where they want the power output measured at, flywheel or wheels, i just get confusion in response. I then asked them do they want a dyno output or something and they still can't tell me. I discussed this with the poor lady for about 5 minutes having no luck so in the end i ended up kind of making it up based on what I thought the power output might be at the flywheel. I think they need to amend their policies on minor mods.

Ahhh ok I see! I just did my quote online and the automatic agreed amount that came in was about $10,000 over what I bought it for. Maybe they do that to allow for modifications?? Mine doesn't have any (YET) so I just knocked the agreed price down to what I paid for it and it reduced the premium. I'd say perhaps if they have no idea about where the power is measured etc it will be mostly cosmetic mods as howlfactor said?

The whole principle of excess is so flawed.

My age excess at 24 $600
My age excess at 25 $0

In one day I become a $600 dollar safer driver. Not to mention said excess has absolutely no bearing on my driving experience. Find it bullshit some one could be 25 and have their license for 3 days and pay $600 bucks less excess than myself who has driven and held comp insurance and a license for almost 8 years straight never making claim.
TROLLEY and Top-Deck like this.

Just went to RAC to update my mod list with new turbo, injector and frp. Agreed value at 37000, 260 kw power (210 before). Incrwased my premium by 250, so I have to increase excess to bought it down.

Excess: 1000
High risk vehicle excess: 700
Agreed value: 37000
Premium: 1365 with max no claim bonus protection

Probably because it is easier and more consistent for insurance companies to base their premium calculation on age rather than driving experience. It is all down to the numbers they get from the actuaries.
