Mod Questions GC8 WRX
Hi Guys,
Hope you're all well Sorry for this noob question but through my research on this topics there are a lot of discussion but still no solid conclusion so I must ask again specifically. So I've got a 99 WRX GC8 and so far the engine mods I have done: X-Force TBE GD STI Intercooler I am slowly building the car but because I am married with 1 kid, I can't dump a large sum of cash at once without getting a divorce LOL So with that said throughout last year I have slowly collected few items yet to be put on the car: VF34 Turbo Apexi Power FC Process West CAI COLD AIR INTAKE What I wanted to know is that I have read a few thread on DIY Pod filter and I'm pretty confident I can do it myself on one weekend to save a bit of money. So with that said am I all right to install the Process West CAI and have the car running as a daily drive without a tune? This will only be temporary for say about 3-4 months before I can get the rest in and tuned. A few workshops I've spoken to that specialise in Subaru and can tune Power FC is also giving me mix respond to this. EVO R said that it will blow up my engine All Star said that it will be fine as long as I don't touch the AFM Your thoughts please? INJECTORS On another note with that mod in mind as above, am I in need of bigger injectors? Again I know there's a lot of article covering this but again most are mixed response, same as the workshops I spoke to EVO R said that I would need bigger injectors and the ones selling in Ebay JECS brand for $300 odd would be fine. RPW said I would need bigger injectors and to not touch those cheap ebay stuff but rather to use Injector Dynamics. All Star said I wouldn't need one for a VF34 because mine is the yellow injector 440cc which would be sufficient enough S-Technic said the same I wouldn't need one with a VF34 as it wouldn't max out the 440cc, they also warn me that the GC8 is a bit troublesome to find the correct injector that doesn't leak etc. Again your thoughts on this please? Thanks guys, again sorry for the noob question, fairly new to the performance scenery. |

we, like all the garages you have spoken to have different opinions but any modifications to fuel, air or exhaust and I'd opt for a dyno session to
1/optimise the mods 2/ensure the car is working as intended AND I would not be running it for an extended period or working it hard until this is completed. Save the cash for the dyno, do the mods the week before

Go with the advice from All Star/Stechnic.

run a bit lean, so a chance of blowing. My advice then, as above, as you are a do it yourselfer, leave the CAI to when you have the tune done. The my99 had 440cc injectors, up from the 375cc (?) of the my97- I reckon sufficient to handle the fuel needs of a VF34. For the 1 in a 1000 chance you have a thirsty setup, the tuner will turn down the boost to keep it safe. Any loss in power will be negligible. |

I ran my 99 with the following
Std 440 injectors VF 34 turbo Fuel pump up grade Std air box with a plastic down pipe feed to the air box 3" norm Buttler exhaust Found a jap 100 Ron ECU at Japan wholesale Smashed it for over three years before selling the car. It's never let the new owner down |

Thanks guys for all the input,
Decided to play it safe and probably just install the CAI closer to the tune date but still undecided with the injectors. Do any of you know or have experience with the JECS 1000cc selling on ebay for $300 odd, it just seems like a very big price difference between that and say like Deatschwerk from online seller like Pro Speed Racing or Car Mods Australia, I mean is it purely brand only or is the ones selling on Ebay are like fake? they all claim that it's ANU tested etc etc. Thanks again guys. |

On the same note just wanted to know what your thoughts are on the VF34? after reading a few turbo specs etc during my research, a lot of people mention that there is a slight lag from the standard TD04, which I am a bit concern.
I use it mainly for street driving and enjoy the pulling power around 3-4,000 rpm because I don't see the point in having a turbo that will sustain up to redline rpm because I almost never push it to redline anyway in fear of getting pulled over by cops. Some people suggested I look at VF28 instead that will suit more to my driving style, they are a bit hard to come by though, I've been looking but not many in good condition like my VF34. A friend of mine who has been playing with performance car for a long time although not Subaru, he's always had Silvia, suggested that I stick with the stock TD04L and get extractors/ Exhaust Manifold, CAI and just tune it, he reckons I would be more happier with that setup. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this. Thanks again guys |

Your mate knows Little and I think he is look down the eye of his man hood
The VF 34 turbo is possibly the best all round turbo you can buy, it would come on around 2750 rpm in most cases. Extractors really only work when there very hot, factory headers in a street car would be best. I would not put my $ down to say headers make more power. You don't need 1000 cc injectors. The yellow 440 cc injectors will be fine The STD air box with the resonator delet will be fine. Save your $ Ps I have used many of the JECS injectors and had no issues. Put a new fuel pump in as well if you have not, its possibly old? I have not looked above if you have done this ? |

Patch may of put up his dyno sheet. That's something to look at as a standard car making good power for it age

Thanks Seagull, a very informative reply... much appreciated.
Yes I have purchased a Walbro 255 LPH, I should receive it shortly and would probably put it right away once I receive it and I also believe it would be fine without tuning as many have claim. Do you think I would also need upgraded Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fuel Rail? again my fried recommended this. Thanks again mate for the info, much appreciated |
