Time to spell it out exactly.

The 99/00 WRX/STi's (These years only NO other) Air flow Meters do not like OILED aftermarket filters. period. fullstop. nadah.

The also do eventually get a bit dirty even when using a factory airbox with a paper filter. Some have also been known to fail from Vibration. In this case however failure will usually take years and years.

A Power FC running a dry Subi paper filter and standard airbox will work fine for basic mods and the AFM will last for years.

However if you have changed to an Oiled (K+N) or any aftermarket panel or pod filter your Subi AFM will start sending out erratic signals to the ECU within a year or two.

In this case people upgrade to a Nissan Z32 AFM that uses a hot wire sensor that rarely fouls with oil.

All your answers to APS CAI and Q45 / Z32 AFM are in this thread on Rexnet:

wrxtasy is the biggest subary 99/00 afm hater , i personally wouldnt put power fc, boost it/advance timing etc...without covering your arse - improving the afm.

my car never had an oil filter, always stock and the afm failed after 90k km

Tis the way i went, and im happy as.

Z32 + PowerFC is the combination i went as i was told and have not looked back since. Idle is fine, z32 is a AFm chosen by competition drifters aparently and yes, they are from a nissan 300zx.
