Default Targa West 2010

I probably wont be entering next year in the dak dak but a decision has been made that because the modern cars have been digging up the roads with r-spec tyres all cars will be on radials next year.

Should be good with for things like the dak dak and not so good for aussie v8's and rwd porkas.

I dont think there will be much cost reduction because anyone even half serious will be on new tyres for each event anyways.

What does everyone think?

What about cars that are homologated with R comps? Seeing how anal they are with the regulations seems somewhat backwards?

Not gonna hurt the GTR's given they havent run on R comps in TW yet.

Sounds like it is equally as much about trying to slow the cars down and maybe improve wet weather performance/safety?

Should save a few $$. Sometimes find a radial goes better with a bit of tread scrubbed off.

Will it help the dak daks and other low powered cars much? Would have thought carrying corner speed was the way to keep these cars in the mix. Although havent done this type of event so you woudl have a better idea Brendon.

define a r comp vs a street radial, when some modern cars carry r comps.

Its a bit hard to say "road tyres only" when semi-slicks are DOT approved are are road legal!

I would think the only way to control it would be by setting treadwear, heat and traction rating limits or for the organisers to produce a list of accepted tyres.

I would say thats where it will head. Probably a minimum treadwear rating, possibly complimented by a list of the most likely to be used tyres that are acceptable with the onus on the competitor to get approval for anything not listed.

I think you will find this type of ruling spreads further in tarmac motorsport. (targa tas etc) Would be far more interest form tyre manufacturers having street rubber being run in these events as opposed to R comps you'd think.

I have spoken to John up at Wheels world about it and he said there is only one street tyre to have for this sort of thing. I think it was a yokohama so maybe that can be the control tyre. Supposedly it is far superior to p zero's etc in terms of grip. Supposedly not real nice on the road because it has a super stiff sidewall but that is not really going to be an issue.

In terms of which cars it helps / hurts at the end of the day the dak dak is so under powered with the pea shooter exhaust that once past the apex you just stand on it and keep grabbing gears. The V8's / Porkas etc have to at least wait until they are somehwere near straight and then lean on the thing. I think the biggest difference will be in the rain. Modern R comps generate so much grip that in my opinion a lot of the 4wd advantage is negated by the extra weight of a 4wd system. Could you imagine going from an R spec GT2 in the dry to radials in the wet? In the subaru the difference would not be that massive because they are so easy to catch but in something like that you would want to be on your a game if you were in a serious hurry.

Also less weight can only be a good thing when you have less available grip. I.e. I dont think it will hurt our braking distances or corner speeds as much as a HSV or Porka.
