Targa South West 2013
For those who weren't aware, Targa South West is on this weekend.
Saturday is on the roads between Pemberton and Manjimup, as well as in Manjimup, and Sunday is the streets of Pemby and a hill climb out of Pemby. We (Sam and I) are competing for the first time in a Targa event. There are a number of others on here who are also competing. Looks like a fun weekend, so if your down there, say hi. Tim |
Best of luck Tim and everyone else competing down there!
I'll be down there doing stage team duties so I'll come say hi :) |
Ooh looks like I might have to come down and watch this and support the pwrx crew :)
|
I was supposed to be pit crew for one of the teams going down a capri and a few other cars but my foreman wouldn't let me go. i and everything planed out as well... i work with a guy named Darren and his 4 door weapon of a torana who will be racing.
Good luck to all those competing |
See you down there Tim, Sam and a number (9?) of other WRX Club WA (some also on this Forum) who are running.
Hopefully we will get further than the 3.5 stages we completed last year! |
Good luck Tim, Steve, Doug, Damien and Chris. Hope all goes well.
Keep them shiny side up. |
Crewing for car 6c in challenge, but wishing I were driving.

Is Darren racing with his wife as co driver ?
|
Darrens co driver is listed as Daymon NICOLI.
Oh so you work for wanneroo chrysler, jeep dodge.
And that would be darren weiss ?
yeah thats correct. How do you know him? me and the foreman good now but still couldn't go... Shit happens might be pit crewing for a guy at targa west. |
Ive been friends with darren for many years...met when we used to race rc together.
I used to be 2 I.C. at wanneroo chrysler back when len sansone was manager and rino fabrizani was controller. |
So you would know my now foreman Jeremy Or Jezza (great bloke but hard to keep happy LOL)

Andrew, that was shot yesterday, so I watched yesterdays news. Today I was putting the car on a trailer for tomorrow and missed it, will tape the repeat of the news at about 12.30 tomorrow am. And thanks |
Going down for a look with the SD mini club, but cruising down in the wife's black veedub gti.
Weatherlooks cold but dry. |
Well we survived, and made it through both days, the second only due to my service guy, Leigh, who solved an overheating problem I only noticed once I had finished the last stage on Saturday.
Learnt a lot doing this event, got a few things right, stayed on the black stuff all weekend except for one of the transit sections, which was dirt. Most of all we both enjoyed ourselves, and thanks to those who came up to say hi, and wish us well, or gave a few tips. All was appreciated and taken on board. Had a few issues with the go pro on Saturday and only got a few stages, Sundays I have all the stages, but I didn't check the camera, and by the last time round Pemby it was on a bit of an angle, but will put a link to this, once its on youtube, as it was my fastest, you'll just have to tilt your screen.;) |

I don't think the smile could have been much bigger on either of your faces when I saw you all day Saturday! |
Not my video, but I did make Big Brook Dam highlights about 10 secs in.:)

[YT]HriQ55NOPzo[/YT]
Should work now :) |
Opps, worked for me when I previewed the post.
|
Well done Tim and Sam.
Glad you enjoyed it and all went well. Are there any results anywhere?? I am guessing not from what the Targa South west web site said. |
Thanks Carl, and there are no results, just the times we received on our time cards.
Last run through Pemby, sorry about the camera angle. (hope the link works first time this time) That and ignore the poor launch. :o [YT]2yWM5EqFFng[/YT] |
Wow, some rough roads! You change the suspension much from where you normally have it?
Well done to both of you for getting out there. |
Yep the roads were rough, the straight after the second right hander had a dip in it where another road passes through about a 1/3 of the way up. This run was the only run I accelerated through it, and wont again.
The last left hander was also a big bump, that doesn't show in the recce to us. There was also a large amount of gravel in the braking zone just before just for fun, which wasn't there the week before. Suspension wise, the ride height was done to have as much spring travel as I could have without lowering the ride much. From previous I ended up lowering the spring collars by 15mm, then raising them by 5mm, after having it on a hoist as the front springs were a bit loose. This didn't how when doing one side at a time due to the roll bar pushing the arms up. (the 15mm drop saw the car lower 5mm, and the 5mm raise saw the ride height return to previous level.) Rebound wise i left them alone, close to 50% hard/soft. This also produced the best ride I've ever had in the car when we checked a few of the stages on Friday. Shocks are DMS40s |

You gotta get 'on the wand' to get on the video! |
Haha, never disappoint!
|
1 right looked really nice, 3 left not so nice, but it gets the air time.:D

All the photos I took during the event are below. From the end of Big Brook Dam 3. Probably the least number of photos I have taken at any event.

Decided to remove the wheels and put trees in their place.

How well does that old school Starion perform? God I always wanted one of them when I got my licence... pretty sure Australia never got the wide body either.
|
Murray Hynes and Steve did well, a team mate, as we were both looked after by Leigh Hynes.
He finished with problems, and really enjoyed the event. |
Finally some time to post...having spent last night and today in bed fighting a horrible cold/flu!
Bruce and I had a great time, but the TSW curse struck on the morning of Day 2 when we discovered that the header tank on the radiator had split, so we parked the car. Saturday was fantastic...the highlight was definitely Gloucester East and West....basically 15+ km pretty well flat out...glanced briefly at the speedo a couple of times to see it wound off the dial (jap spec 180 speedo) sitting on the pin to stop the needle starting at zero again. Hitting the big dip at top speed was interesting too...but the car stayed really stable. The Manji town stage was a blast except for the final run where we couldn't see a thing into the sun. Kurandra was difficult heading directly into the sun then into the shade.... basically the whole stage pretty well runs west into the setting sun. Overall the car was brilliant...the rear suspension changes we made worked well...it was just a pity about the radiator. Big thanks to my navigator Bruce and service crew Chrispy and Neil Evans....and of course to the organisers and all the volunteers without whose help such events couldn't run. |
Some photos I took are on the WRX Club of WA facebook page.
Was a great weekend! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.535716659819110.1073741828.132005776856869&type=1 |
Steve, when I saw you in your suit at the motel, I thought you were all good for day 2, and we were out, how things can change in 30 mins.
