Lug Nut Tightness

Ok this may seem like a stupid question, but I don't know the exact answer so I am going to ask.

How tight should you do up your Lugs?

I changed the tyre after John at wheels world put them on and they were so tight I had to use my foot, with my whole body weight behind it to get them off and was still a bich.
I changed my wheels again last night, I thought I had tightened them too much when I put them on, but the lugs came off with ease........???????

How tight should they be done?

Cheers

There is a torque setting in the owners manual, but if you had to use your foot to loosen the nuts that is too tight.

jaron you want it tight enough so you can undo it in the event of a flat tyre... when i tighten mine.. i go till its rather tight and try and turn 1/4 more.. as you would have found out, tyre shops use rattle gun which is un-neccesary but its all about moving cars as fast as possible i guess :(

Side of the road rule of thumb for tightening:
- as tight as you can with 1 hand if you are strongish bloke
- as tight as you can with both hands for women / girly man / WARPIO

Doing them up/undoing with your feet = bad.

I have actually cracked the socket on a star brace trying to get a rim off the wife's car after the tyre place rattled them on  That much torque just leads to stretched studs, stripped threads, and much frustration.

I put mine on at 80 and they are not that tight at all, my wife could undo em I reckon.

yeh too tight is bad bad bad man... if i got me car in anyware that involves the wheels to come off. i ask them to tightn the nuts by hand as i have had people strip the thread off the nuts.. some people have been good some havent..

well i had somewhat the same sorta issue, had new tyres put on last year by thomsons tyres in beechboro.
had brand new lock nuts on the day b4 it went there, had to take a wheel of on the weekend, only to find they had used the rattle guns and rounded both the lock nuts and the key to remove them...
