crunch

ok take off normally in first at about 3.5-4 rpm change to 2nd clutch out and crunch, crunch and some more crunching...ive had the car less than a month clutch is brand new, the gearbox history is not very well known by me, was rebuilt how long ago i have no idea
(i know it would be hard to tell what it is but ill try anyways you guys are a knowledgable bunch!)
so im rolling on the highway trying to find a gear before i run out of steam nothing doing.
pull over into a bus stop lane thingo ring the old man
cant find any gear at all nothing engages, had 4th and reverse for a minute but then i couldnt find them either, in neutral i took my foot off the clutch and the car stalls
ended up towing home (all of 2 kms) with foot on the clutch
im guessing that the box has blown hoping to get it looked at asap
can anyone further enlighten me on what may have happened???
cheers

sounds like you've stripped second gear and the ensuing shrapnel has damaged other parts of the box.

Cheapest option would be to simply replace the box with a good condition second hand unit. Probably cost you in the range of $2 to 2.5K with labour.

Nasty - Good luck with it.

'Normally' taking off at 4k doesn't sound too normal to me.

When at the lights, i let out the clutch around 2500rpm and slip the clutch a little to get full momentum before full release.

haha no normal take off, the change from first to 2nd at about 3.5-4 thousand rpm...it was 12 30 am when i wrote it so i wasnt very awake hence the bad wording

yeah talked to a few people today and they reckon the whole box is fucked
:(

looking at something bit stronger this time, pricing on straight cuts first and second?? do they just modify a box or build it new??
any help appreciated
cheers

There is some place over east - Like 'Soobaroo' or some shit - All they do is Boxes and seem to be pretty good.

I'm sure someone has the link - Take a look on Rexnet.

Get an STi RA gearbox or MY02+ 4.44 FD ratio box if you want something a bit stronger.

6 Speed STi if you really want to splash out for a bullet proof job......

yeah RA box sounds like a good option, cheaper than straight cuts id hope
are they still made brand new?? im not keen on going throught the problem again...are the boxes year specific??? the car is a 98 club spec evo 2, if someone could give me a rough price range that would be handy, i have little time for research as im working my ass off to fund the new box
would it be cheaper to source the box myself and then take it to someone for an install or save the hassle and take it to the workshop and let them sort it??
sorry for all the questions..pretty new to this caper
cheers guys and gals :)

This would be an expensive way to go because you would also need the rear diff to get the right ratio.

IMHO I would either a) Buy ramons holinger dogbox ready to go for $8k. Then when funds allow repair your box with original stuff and sell it for approx $1500.

b) build up something with straight cuts 1-4. From memory this will cost approx $4k.

c) other option is to buy a second hand box and just bolt it straight in. This will cost approx $2k and hopefully will have had less of a hard life than your current box.

Buying a new box from subaru is drug money. Dont even entertain the thought.

Wow Strait cut gboxes for 4k, do i still get the coco pops in the box with it too ?

that was something i would be looking at, i assume you need a box in working order for them to modify?
what sort of boxes would you recommend?

also just looking for an opinion, "pmh" pm'd me selling
4.11 box, no diff
came from a MY95/96 WRX STI
Code TY752VB4AA
Done under 50,000kms, was still running when removed

how much for the appropriate diff??
