strenghening the sti ra gearbox...
decided to give this a go wrxtasy
i am currently having my 97 sti ra rebuilt at asg and am debating whether it's the appropriate time to strengthen the box and/or getting an idea of figures associated with getting it done along with the most appropriate option...[went through a pile of websites, decided.. then went back to step 1]. Only thing.. I would rather spend less than 6k... a lot cheaper would be even better driving style : i do a lot of highway kms per week[around 800], plus about 200km normal city driving. i don't have a heavy foot, but i do push it through the gears hard every so often when the situation arises. this car will go to the plex a few times just for a bit of fun. it will also be used for a bit of track use as well at wanneroo. most importantly though, i just want the assurance that i won't kill it if i give it bit of stick here and there. while the engine is getting run in, the car will be babied... right after that, watch out, i want to see what it can do power the box will need to handle?... well, i'd just like for it to be able to handle around 400-450 horses if i continue to modify, so let's use that as a guide. any help appreciated. |

This is the 4.444 box yeah?
If your doing that many highway kms a week i would be putting in a 3.9 box and diff straight cut gear set so wont be reving its tits off when sitting at 100kms! Plus 3.9 better for drags but thats about the only thing though but yeah its personal preference!

I'm looking at doing similar soon with a V2 RA 3.9/3.9 close ratio box, my upgrade wish list is to drop in a Sti helical front LSD, if I can afford it a (PPG?) 1/2 shaft and helical gears and forks (later when the originals break as they probably will), and to change 5th to 0.825 so I'm not doing 3300rpm at 100kmh.
Your box (check the numbers) should already have widened gears and double synchro, they're actually pretty good as they are. Mines only got the double synchro. My only other addition will be a manual DCCD. I take it you have uprated the clutch and flywheel (light moly), and get as much Sti mounts/braces as you can lay hands on (they work well). |

Another thing you might want to research is bracing for the gearbox case, according to some rally people I have known, the cases moving under load can be a problem with 4 bolt boxes. It's less of a problem with 8 bolts apparently.
If you find any info I'd appreciate it if you keep me up to date. |

if u want an unbreakable box, go for a sti- 6-speed. If u start going dogbox type gears it will be a pain in the arse to drive...
6500 should prolly get u a decent box then u could sell urs for around 2gs.. Thats what id do to save any chance of breaking a gear... Sti 5-speed boxes arent strong at all, virtually the same as a standard wrx 5-speed but have different gearing which puts lets stress on the gears..

don't forget being an RA he will have a DCCD rear housing which he can't transfer between the 5 speed and the 6 speed
