Learning things the hard way.. Auto Tranny Fluid
 

Hey guys, I had no idea that the auto gearboxes in the rs liberty's ran the transmission lines in to the radiator and back as a tranny cooler! So when i removed the radiator to have it serviced tomorrow, there was a line i couldn't reach, so I cut it thinking I would replace it, not knowing i dropped all the tranny fluid underneath. Whats the correct procedure on filling the auto back up again? And what fluid would you recommend? The auto has done about 150'000km. Oh and yes I've already hit the search button, but can't seem to find anything specific..

erm, you should have a book in your glove box with all of your answers in it.

Id have a punt at new Auto tranny fluid after you have drained the rest thats left in the box.

i imagine you'd find a better idea on the rslibertyclub forums, but normal ATF should do it. where you fill it from? no idea

Be the same style transmission as a auto wrx/impreza. It will run dextron 3, though they only usually loose 1l max out of the cooler lines. There will be a dipstick on the LH side for the ATF and on the right hand side for the diff oil. Just check that it is near full cold on the dipstick, or top it up

yeah as whiterx said dexron III should be sweet, you usually fill them up from the dipstick....at least ive never seen an auto with a to up plug!!! :p just remember once youve put some oil in you will need to let the oil settle out of the dipstick pipe or you'll get the wrong reading :D

Well I got all my problems sorted. I ended up going a brand new generic radiator for $300 with a 12 month guarantee. And all the pipes, fluids and fittings cost $70. So I installed the Radiator my self, replaced the Tranny lines from the gear box to the cooler, replaced top and bottom hoses and also did a couple of the 8mm heater hoses that run around the place. I figured out the gear box fluid, and now thats topped up and running sweet. No more water leaks!! I will admit, it takes a lot longer for the temperature to get up, but now it runs far more smoother. I re used the thermostat, as I had it tested and its perfect, so I just replaced the O-ring and the gasket. Not bad for $370 bucks and 4 hours work :)
