Just to make it clear:

1) Is the Brant not powering up the electrical system of your WRX when you put your code in ?

or is it:

2) The car won't start after the Brant code is entered and car powered up. ie. engine cranks but car won't start up ?

If its number 2 then I would check the Crank Angle Sensor.
Subaru would surely have checked this when buggering about with the Brant. ???

Other questions:
What ECU - you really have to find out !!!!

try leaving the keys in the on position, just before you crank for 10 seconds. Then try and start the car.

This may seem silly, but are you doing the following:

Put keys in
Turn to IGN
Type in code and wait for the yellow check engine light to come on
Turn keys to on to crank the engine
Engine Starts

??

From what you have described it sounds like you are not turning the car on after entering the code, when you switch the car off and then turn it back on the code is still 'active' and will thus start. Also sounded like the car was in Valet mode when it worked for 10 tries.

any ideas? wouldnt just be a faulty relay or something

So after entering your code the yellow engine light doesn't come one? Does the keypad make any noises after entering the code?

Check you are entering the correct code if so take it back to Subaru to fix. You do turn the key after entering the code (the keypad doesn't start the car)?

mine does this too sometimes, after entering code the fuel pump should prime but in these instances it does not

When its all working properly you can hear the pump prime after entering your code (especially if you have an aftermarket pump)

only happens every now and then (once every month maybe) im hoping this '02 brant recall will fix it
