Coolant Flush
 

Hi all,

Going to do a coolant change soon. Found some good threads on wrx/liberty forums elsewhere which describe the process.

Has anyone done one, and can point me in the right direction re: potential problems, and how the system should be properly/effectively "burped"?

Where are the drain plugs located on the EJ257 block? Any tricks for getting all the coolant out of the block?

Luca, i dont think its ideal to drain from the block.. dont think there is a plug anyways...
best do it from the radiator :)

Just check under radiator to see if its got a drain plug. If not refer to Chee's post

i dont think subaru radiators do have a drain plug... you just have to detach the bottom hose.

i dont quite get how you do a flush though?

"STEP4: Flush radiator from bottom outlet until fluid coming out top outlet is clear."

actually, from what i remember, i took out the thermostat (bottom part of the block) and shoved a hose through the top hose and just ran the water through till it was clear through the bottom hose.

Chee - How did you flush the water out afterwards, to stop it diluting the coolant?

That's specifically what I'm after. Want to get all the coolant out with the flush, and then get all the water afterwards.

tip the car on a vertical angle! ;) maybe just angle the car on a driveway and see what happens?....or maybe hook up the compressor and blow water out?

how exactly do you hook the compressor up?

also i dont think i will be doing the flush as i dont want tap water through my block as this will corode the internals of my engine. might poor some distilled water through it.

What year is your car? Coolant should be good for around 2yrs. Flushing the radiator is a piece of cheese. Getting the coolant out of the galleries and pump is a little harder, but it is not absolutely vital imo. It's only a small percentage left of old coolant after gravity does it magic anyway. I spose if you want to be anal about it go ahead, I've never seen any point to getting every last skerrick out.

And as for rusting your internals out from tap water well it's kinda the same. A very small bit of water will be left. Again if you want to be anal, use distilled water. The use of inhibitors in the coolant will be enough to stop that happening anyway.

On a side note if water is touching anything but coolant passages/water pump etc I think rust is the last problem you will encounter :eek:

EDIT: the sti coolant system holds about 7.6 liters.

How do you hook the compressor up? :confused:

It isn't due for a radiator flush, but the new turbo has done its first 1000km, and being anal, I'm going to give it some new oil and coolant.
