For anyone who has had a mechanic build or rebuild a motor...

Whether you have spent 10, 15 or 100k that the cooling system would be checked.

In terms on a) the hoses being replaced OR b) the thermostat [a very cheap, especially for trade] to be replaced or c) the radiator at the very least being looked at to make sure it's not clogged.

From each person I've spoken to, it looks like neglect... but I would like some objective opinions.

it depends on what you asked for on the job. Usually at my work, a engine wont go out without a radiator service and top tank/replacement, new water pump, hoses, thermostat, filters, plugs, even vac lines if they are required and anything else that looks slightly sus (belts, idlers etc)
But most people dont like it when they get a quote for a engine, and it is 6k where everywhere else quotes 4k, so it depends on what you asked for.

If you ask for a job that isnt too expensive, then expect problems in the future. If you tell them to replace anything that they see fit, then expect a large bill, but better reliability

yep, agreed... all depends on what you ask for not what you EXPECT.

a mate of mine works for the engine exchange and they do change the radiators etc when they do engine swaps as he's taken a couple of old ones to go onto a buggy they were rebuilding, had to find the right size.

The cooling system should be checked regardless! Any proper mechanic will do this and if you think otherwise you are dealing with back yardies that shouldn't be mechanics!!!

that's the problem these days, there are lots of these types out there that would rather cut corners and try to make more money than do it properly and you dont usually know until its too late

How is this relevent to this discussion? About as relevant as some knob being the grammar police and using "......" to start and finish a sentence.

Back on topic.

It was an apparent specialist and they didn't check the cooling system at all. You would assume the cooling is of extreme importance in regards to any full engine rebuild. I did ask them to check everything and they missed quite a few other things I asked about.

TopGear 15-12-2007 07:15 PM

yeah i took my land rover in to get fixed for sticky valves and they found a blown head gasket so the checked the radiator and it was blocked and changed everything went from costing 2200 to nearly 5k
