Oil Light troubles?
 

hey guys, just thought id try and pick you guys knowledge on what would be causing my oil light to come on.

ok so i noticed it the other week when coming on boost the oil light comes on at bout 3.5k revs and then goes off at bout 4k.
and now when i start the car it comes on.. then goes out after the car has warmed up a bit.
now i have checked the oil level and it is all filled up.
is this a sign that the oil pump is on its way out?
does anyone know were the oil senor is located? as in at the front of the motor at the top etc..

oil light comes on with low oil pressure.

Never heard of a oil pressure sensor failing and the oil pump is very reliable in Subarus.
Do you have any oil leaks like around the turbo banjo bolts? Id get the oil pump checked/replaced and also have a look at the sump oil pickup.

Oil pressure sensor is located on the top of the motor very close to the front. Its just behind the alternator.

Dont get on boost until you can get this sorted. I personally wouldnt even drive the car at all. You risk damaging your crank bearings and then requiring a rebuild/new short motor.

Don't know if it will help you much but I had the Oil Pressure light come on in my 02 STi. It turned out the sender was ferschnickered. It would come on 20 seconds or so after start up and stay very dimly lit and on the odd occasion pulse a little and sometimes even go out. Didn't cost much to replace direct from Subaru Ozzie Park

Either way don't drive it till it's diagnosed and fixed!!

i have had a breif look and i cant see any oil leaks.
phizzle - thats sounds like wat is happen to mine atm.. light comes on but pulses on like varies its brightness and goes out and comes back on.

Roger that. Get it looked at asap just to make sure. Takes about 5s to swap it over with one that works IF that's all it is.

Hey Adz... IMO, your on the money, thinking 'oil pump' but it might not be that bad... When the front crank seal becomes old, it tends to let small amounts of air passed it, as it trys to pick up the oil from the sump. Just check out the front of your engine, just below your crank pulley and check for signs of oil...

To answer your question... The oil sender unit is right below the Alternator :)

Check your sender.

Oil pumps that are down on pressure won't necessarily trigger the oil light (ask me how i know this) but will still allow you to drive your car...keep in mind though, that heavy load and rpm will throw a bearing very quickly with
this situation.

Alternatively, the worst case scenario is that a bearing (or bearings) is worn out or scored for some reason, which would create a drop in oil pressure from excessive clearance.

so your sayin that it sounds like more of the sender that is screwed than the pump?

i wouldn't have thought this seal would be old at only 93,000k's
