i think i used to have a couple on my old cortinaas a kid, they were called su's and yeah i remember putting auto trans fluid in them or sometimes run them empty for that rattly effect LOL, here is a link explaining how they work: http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/carburation.html

It's a damper on the piston. Fill it to the step inside with a mix of 1/2 auto trans, 1/2 CRC. Screw the top back on just loosely and reach inside and push the piston all the way up. Allow any excess oil to escape out the threads so the piston can reach the top, then just finger tighten the knob. Fuel mixture is adjusted by raising or lowering the seat that the big needle on the bottom of the piston slides into. There's a nut under the bottom of the carby that you can click in or out for best running.
Or just walk away, mini's will make you mad, as will anything else made in G.B.

As far as i know Weber DCOE carbs (SD) are not designed exactly like the ones mentioned above. I think dtrally is referring to SU carbs... used in rovers, jags and minis and a number of british cars.

All of this is spot on, Machine oil is one of the best things for SU's, as long as not too much is used. And more on that I've also got some British and Jap SU's lying around if anyone wants them! I think I've got a couple of different manifolds too.

Yeah, I was talking about S.U.'s as Feral asked about the oiling system. I assumed he didn't have a Weber as they don't have any oil damper on them. Weber on a mini requires the carburettor to stick through the firewall into the cabin, burns your eyes (and the back of the speedo) when they backfire!
