Coolant leak
 

Hi guys, we picked up the new car and after test driving for a bit I have noticed that the way its losing coolant is through the overflow.
I was told when i bought it that he was told he would need a new motor because the head gasket or heads were gone.

Now the car drives fine, I have checked the oil and there is no white coolant mix goo in it, and it doesnt have that "rainbow" look that oil gets with a slight mix of coolant.

Is it possible that it could be the thermostat?

Also have driven the car ALOT for 2 days and it still isnt losing enough coolant to overheat, I've topped it up now and it took a bit but not heaps.

BTW its a 95 wrx ej20t

i'd be inclined to think it could be something as simple as a buggered radiator cap not pressurizing the system properly (this would cause overflow), get it checked by a workshop asap though, cos if the head or head gasket are fucked, theres a chance your motor will get waterlocked and you're not gonna have a full set of working pistons for much longer!

taking a punt. crack in the radiator bottle? happened to me.

They usually run really cold without the thermostat.... lucky to get the heaters to work, if it gets hot quickly when you boost it it'll be a head gasket, mine showed no signs of a water oil mix & it was well cooked (20 min running dry) make sure the hose going up through to the throttle body from the water pump is connected too, some idiots disconnect them & it gives the symptoms of a fugged head gasket.

is it bad to disconnect the coolant lines that go through the throttle body? i bypassed mine ages ago, and now you mention it i do get a few stalls when i pull up to traffic lights but only occasionaly, time to re-connect it ay?

Yeh it takes ages to heat up, the rx we have takes like 5 mines of driving to get to running temp but the wrx takes like 10 15 sometimes and it fluctuates from mid way to under 1/4.
I'm pretty sure its thermostat but we had the car booked into Tenagah for a new motor on Wednesday anyway, providing it is thermostat we will be stoked and be able to spend the money on some other bits and peices.

I'll check out the hose to the throttlebody aswell.

I really don't know how they work but I put my ex wife onto a car that was on here & some ass clown had actually blocked them off from the water pump...used a marker pen apparently, the car had all the symptoms of a blown head gasket but this turned out to be the problem, re routing them may not be as bad but I guess they are there for a reason.

Head gasket :S oh well can't win em all atleast we budgetted for it when we bought the car and on the plus side apparently the rest of the motor isnt in that bad condition for its age so we are fixing with sti stuff.

Considering ej207 but depends on what we can afford :S

buy a low km replacement 96 WRX motor from Ichiban for $1200 landed. Plus approx $500 for fitting. Done.

With the old motor out, you can either fix it and sell it. or keep it for parts.
