Default Seems like dodgy AFM but no fault code!

Hey all,

So I've recently got a MY99 and it seems to surge and stuggle a bit when under part throttle near the first bit of boost (so 0-5psi between 2500-3500rpm). It also drops it's idle every now and then when coming to a stop.

Been reading and searching the forum a fair bit and it seems like the very common problem of the AFM going but I thought I'd check the fault codes by connecting up the black plugs under the dash. It only gave the normal half second flashes...

Is it possible that the AFM is cactus and the ECU doesn't know about it? Should I try the full ECU reset procedure and see if it picks it up then?...

yeah

in the beginning as the AFM dies it wont throw a CEL code.

Replace it now. its not expensive. If you wait until you get a CEL for the AFM your engine could be on its last legs.

Thanks guys,

I haven't tried cleaning it yet but yeah, maybe I'll just bite the bullet and fork out for a new AFM. Would rather spend a little now rather than a lot over an engine meltdown!

Where's best to get a new one from? Is it a Suby genuine part only thing or maybe try somewhere else?

When my AFM went it threw a CEL, but yes it does sound like your AFM is rooted, replace it quick smart! Any subaru dealer should have them, regents sell new subaru parts, or JWS if your after a second hand one.

Damn! scary stuff!

I guess this afternoon's mission is definitely to track one down!

MaD_OwNeD, you've swapped your ecu over haven't you? so a z32 AFM wouldn't be a stock straight-swap option right?

Hope you're not running an oiled K&N or similar filter because it'll happen again. Go to Dick Smiths & but a can of contact cleaner & try that first, better $20 than $200 every time it gets dirty, I make it a habit to clean mine about every 6 weeks. Just take it really easy till you do it.
