Blown Gearbox - Fixed.

hey fella's i was driving to work today, lately i have been driving off boost to save fuel, but i came out of a turn off and into a 90zone where i put my foot down in second and got to about 5000rpm and it just went bang, and then a horrible noise like parts rolling around in a metal casing or something...

I limped home in first, then 3rd.

I can put the clutch in while rolling and the noise doesnt go away, i can still access 2nd gear at stand still. all gears are very stiff and rough feeling.

Any chance its a cv joint or ould it be the transmission? i dont kno if ive given enough info but fark me that put a dampener on my day..

I have 2 cars, a brumby and a WRX.. the brumby's down with a fucked ultinator, and now the rex is down with a fucked who knows what..possible VERY expensive..

i had to call in sick for work as i cant get in there!!

Ash

Edit: The gearbox is now replaced, thanks to Dtrally/Doug. He is a great bloke who knows his stuff and really pulled a big favour for me.

Thanks, ash.

drain the gearbox fluid and look for shiny bits.

Alright, i'll do it tonight when my dad gets home from work, we'll get it up on the stands and do that. i didnt even have the clutch in when it happened, just foot down.

Thanks Chee

chances are by driving it home, all the teeth broken off second gear have flown around inside your box and damaged all the other gears and synchro's, seagull (neil) may still have a couple of complete gearbox for sale for around the $1200-$1500 mark, defianately your cheapest option, maybe send him a pm to see if he has one that matches your gear ratio's

are you runing an upgraded HD clutch? if so that may have caused it :(

Cooper89 18-07-2008 08:30 AM

yes, heavy duty organic clutch.. it happened when i was about 800m from home... This is depressing its raining so hard i just want to drive in it!

I can definalty afford another stock gearbox.. then theres labour, but im keen to find out more about helical cut gears as i dont want it breaking again..

Thanks Strubaru

no probs mate, when i blew mine up i was thinking the same thing but the prices that were coming back added upto the same price as a 6 speed conversion (about $6k) i ended up going for a secondhand low k box out of a version 5 sti type ra with dccd, cost me $2k from a wreckers in sydney, $125 to freight it over here, apparenlty these boxes are slightly stronger as 1st 2nd & 3rd are a bit wider, the dccd is great fun, i just got a dccd controller hooked up now & its great to be able to switch from 65% rear for a bit of drifting fun to 50-50 lock for great control in the wet :D definately a good upgrade from the stock without too much cost :) put a lightened flywheel on it whilst you have the box out too :D

Dont just drain the box to check for lollys.

I drained the box in mine and seen no lollys but i ended up having a stripped mainshaft and all teeth shreaded off 2nd gear!

The casing that all the gears sits in is sort of half separated fron the drain hole section

das is definitely kaput ya.

ppg gearsets for sale on rexnet.

Look for a 6-speed as they are indestructible.. Will cost a fair bit more but worth it imo...

I'll go check my money tree.. :P Im not sure i'll be able to.. people are saying a STi RA 5spd will be a cheap yet effective option..

But thanks for the input guys.. really not a cool thing to happen :(
