ECU + LAPTOP Which Type

Can anyone tell me what type of laptop would i need to tune Autronic/Motec/other Ecu's. What speed would it need and also what type of connectors would it need to have.

thanks

You should probably pick an ecu 1st, then worry about laptop later.

ur gonna tune it urself
nice work.

probably somthin id attempt to do myself as well
lol
the only difference is i would have no idea what im doing

id assume that the actual hard ware wouldnt matter but I need to know what type of cable they use i.e. Serial/Usb etc

can anyone help.
Also the laptop isnt just for tunning it can be used for logging software and readouts while driving with certain ECU. I believe Autronic and Motec have a real time display on rpm/speed etc.

correct me if im wrong

you need a serial port

geoff 12-07-2005 02:58 PM

If you get a motec M800 you need a parallel port or USB, if you get just about anything else - serial port.

The motec uses CAN, which goes too fast for traditional serial ports.

I'll probably get the Autronic system is that serial port?

Yes.

If the laptop doesn't come with a serial port you can usually get a USB->Serial convertor but I don't know if this will work with the Autronic ECU.

Yeah it will, Leigh @ RMS uses a USB>Serial convertor for tuning Autronic using his laptop (well, when he was tuning mine at least).

yeah the biggest issue with the convertors is getting them installed correctly on the lappy with the right drivers and then assigning a valid com port to the device that the tuning software can use. I just set up a water quality monitoring device using one yesterday.
