Pedders Morley - rear end knocking noise

Anyone been here?? I have my car that I just bought yesterday booked in here to work out wtf is the knocking/banging/hitting/WRONG sound coming from the rear? Took it to Amfor Motors this morning Jim put it up...had a look checked the wheel bearings all seems ok...test drive and what do u know it doesnt fking happen when we go test drive it even tho on the way to him it was....hence his conclusion would be possibly the rear suspension had moved when he lifted it on the hoist and readjusted. Back springs are cut 'apparently' so does this sound like a common issue? Pedders $14 ...28 point check im hoping to God picks it up and fixes it for not more than my right arm. :(

Strubaru 19-09-2008 10:47 AM

what model car mate? does it have 03-04 sti rear struts? if so knocking noise is a common problem withe these struts

nachjoe 19-09-2008 10:58 AM

sorry my00 gc8

ITGRIPS 19-09-2008 11:03 AM

off chance but what's the rear muffler like?? because.....

my car would make a clicking/knocking noise when cornering left, sort of sounded like a crap CJ you hear on front wheel drives. had the bearings checked, all ok, had the suspension checked, all ok.... turned out to be the rear muffler hitting the suspension. RMS ground off a corner of the muffler, neatened it up and now no noise!! hasn't hit or made a noise again

Strubaru 19-09-2008 11:03 AM

see if you can have a look at the rear top hats and make sure that the strut main bolt is central to the strut top & tightened properly, if it is a bit off centre when assembling the struts it can feel like its bolted up properly but then when you go for a drive the strut can move & cretes a knocking noise

that would be the 1st thing i would inspect, hope this is the cause as its a $0 cost fix :)

jEstEr? 19-09-2008 11:05 AM

if it has cut springs chances are they are no longer "captive". maybe putting it up on the hoist and lowering it down again put them in the right spot for a little while till they fell out again?

Checked the muffler...the only thing is actually touches is a bit of tin right at the back...thin tin im not even sure what it is..it comes from under the bumper...its not that tho...I thought it might be the exhaust hitting the axle off the diff and this does touch every now and then u can see 'maybe over bumps' but this is about 10mm clearance and if it was to hit its only hitting the non rotating part of it on the cv boot. Cant be that. Im thinking back springs are sagging and the thump thump thump over and over as I drive it the tyres hitting the inside of the guard or something?? I DUNNO :s

nachjoe 19-09-2008 11:22 AM

Strubaru i will look at that when I get back to my car after work... jEstEr I think ur right...maybe...dunno farrrk :S pedders have their own springs yeh?? wonder how much they will slug me?

Kato 19-09-2008 11:46 AM

For real advice, I'd stop messing around with Pedders $14 inspection and go see an Subaru specalist workshop or Wheels World.

They will be able to tell you quick smart what the issue is and the best fix.

Amfor Motors is a Subi specialist..I was originally waiting from 7am at typerpower (cos this is close to work) he didnt even bother looking directed me around the corner to Jim at Amfor Motors. Subi signs all over the place n the garage is full of rex's and other subi's. Ex subi mechanic I take it..he stopped working on a car and spent a good 25 mins looking at it no charge..nice guy.

Cut springs - awesome.. !

They're not sitting in there properly - and will fall out when u raise up the car

Pretty simple stuff - spring is too short in the strut

trusti rex 19-09-2008 07:05 PM

dont have spherical bearing top plates on your struts do you? i do and they knock occasionally. (but its normal for them)

cut springs on a subi? FTMFL :eusa_clap

meatbag 19-09-2008 11:00 PM

Simple and best solution. Take the car back to subaru - inform them that they have sold you an unsafe car and demand it be fixed - cut springs is a massive fail!

Any car they sell comes with a limted warranty on issues like this. freebies all the way.

nachjoe 20-09-2008 05:15 PM

nah meatbag the car was purchased of a dude on here not a yard....'sleepys' old car originally...must have been pretty tired and not thinking straight when he decided to cut them!

Adz..ur spot on bud! i must have gone over some big fk off bump and it raised by 20mm and the spring 'fell out' how nice. Pedders say any more than 20mm raise n they fall out. Suggested if I want it that low I need coilovers..and quoted me $1892 for 4 supplied fitted and wheel allignment.

astralex 21-09-2008 11:45 AM

I reckon this is a similar problem to what my car does, every now and then it clunks and it sounds like it's from the rear end. And yes when it's on a hoist the springs come out of something, or so I'm told, but I know for a fact that they're not cut springs.

Have you actually thought to ask Dave about the springs before running your mouth off on the forum?

If you came into my workshop i would slap you straight back out the door.

Get some uncut springs, and then complain about noise. Cut springs will have ha habit of moving around in the perch, sometimes not sitting correctly and will make this noise

nachjoe 24-09-2008 01:49 PM

joshg123 calm down tiger!! i didnt cut the springs...im a father of 2 who will be riding in the back seat of this car...so safety is my number 1.. I had no f'in idea the noise was the springs..the pervious owner and the owner b4 apparently NEVER EVER had this problem..so I didnt know wtf to think or wtf it was.

But thanks for ur advice...its excatly what I am doing.

Thanks for the nice comment, I didn't cut them.

My EX mechanic never noticed they where cut, hence I didn't know.
Until it was pre-purchased checked at ASG. I then told the buyer that the springs were chopped. So if he didn't tell you, then thats nothing to do with me.

Sorry this has ended up this way, but far as Im concerned I did nothing wrong.

EVL WRX 24-09-2008 02:31 PM

buyer beware....

end of story...

Sleepy all good mate!! Tom said only the back were chopped and he only knew this cos he seen them up on a hoist one day. Anyway all im worried about is I know what the noise was now thats all my concern was originally. Dont take offence to the above Sleepy...i was just adding in a bit of humour being a smartass lol ...sorry.

nachjoe 24-09-2008 03:20 PM

oh and one other thing....ASG have never seen the car before..only RMS one time for the link install/tune.

I'm almost 100% sure they have. Mark Preston had it checked out there when he was going to buy it. I also remember someone saying they spotted my car there because of the plates.

Did you call ASG?

phizzle 24-09-2008 03:31 PM

How fukn bogan would you have to be to gas axe springs in this day and age anyway??

Glad you're on the right track now nachjoe :)

nachjoe 24-09-2008 04:01 PM

yeh i called asg...spoke to nick he looked it up..nothing...even sent them pics to refresh their memory..still nothing. anyway doesnt matter.

N phizzle thanks champ!
