You'll probably have to remove the centre dash to do it properly, that weird metal box you're talking about I suspect is the computer that's running the airbags in your car.

I also used the barrel to power my old apexi gauges.

I also noticed it put alot of shit into my car, so i made up a distribution block behind the stereo headunit area for easy hookup later down the track. Since then its been rather easy hooking up 12v bits and pieces.

Just go down to jaycar buy some bits

is there a limit to how much load you can put on the cigy lighter, like will a fuse blow or will the cigy lighter still work.. eg: if i hook up a few things all 12v, can i still run my phone charger off it.

should be fine - considering you can buy cigarette lighter double/triple adapters

Yeah i made a distrabution block off it as well made it alot easier
as far as limit i had inverter, lights, radar, and neveer had a drama
