Another Exhaust Question
Hi guys, after searching through the endless exhuast threads, couldn't find anything that answered my question. I was talking to Nik at ASG yesterday, and he mentioned that the heavier an exhaust is, the quieter it will be, to a certain extent. The reason he gave was the denser (is that a word) material used absorbs more of the noise... Something along those lines anyway. Just wandering what other peoples opinions on this are?
Reason I ask is I am looking at getting one of ASG's exhausts, however ideally I want something louder but don't want it too drone... Cheers, James |

solution
easy, get a 3" mandrel bent stainless steel exhaust fitted and then find a muffler with a exhaust note that you like

If you tell Nik what your requirements are, go with his suggestions (or any other workshop you may want opinions from). Basically Nik is trying to sell you the best bang for buck exhaust you can buy, cheap, 3" turbo back, cannon muffler. Allow the new exhaust to get some carbon build up in it and it should sound pretty bloody good. Also, as you have a piggy wrx, there will be alot more sound deading from factory in it, which will keep noise in the cab down a bit. What sounds not quite loud enough to you will sound like a yellow sticker to Mr. Plod

mild steel exhausts are a bit quieter and a bit better note, but they are heavy as farq

correct answers here, lighter/thinner/less dense = louder usually, more raspy etc etc..
Its physics.. I have exhaust system that is quite loud, perrin headers, x-farce dump (mild steel I think?) then Trust Titanium from the dump back and titanium cannon. Its light (centre and exhaust combined weighs less than 6kgs). Trade off is that it does drone at certain speeds, but I wanted lightness, note and performance which is what I got. Wasnt cheap. : )
