brant + battery swap

I swapped the battery on the my00 and now the brand pad shows a 1 instead of a 0, seems to start just fine but the radiator is out now so i cant do much testing however anyone know what this means?

battery was only off the car for 15 seconds or so.

Tells you how to reset after battery change/flat battery in there dude.

werticusness 22-01-2009 05:05 PM

okay thanks for that look like its gone into valet mode for some reason.

phizzle 22-01-2009 06:52 PM

start up/switch off 9 or 10 times and it'll be time for skids again

werticusness 27-01-2009 02:04 PM

I switched it on and off 9 times and it seems to be back to normal but the car wont start anyway.... does this mean its forgotten the code? because it seems to disarm like normal however I don't hear the fuel pump pressurising any more. maybe the fuel pump has died? It did start for about 3 seconds then promptly died and wouldn't start again.

werticusness 28-01-2009 02:58 PM

no clues?

how long was the battery disconected??

you may need subaru to put in a master code...

Rexy03 28-01-2009 07:02 PM

have you tried waking it from sleep mode?

fobz 28-01-2009 07:59 PM

Take it to subaru.

For future reference, best way to swap the battery is...
1. Clip "spare" battery in parallel across your current battery.
2. Disconnect current battery. Spare battery will keep car (brant) powered.
3. Hook up new battery, secure in car.
4. Disconnect spare.

That way the car never actually loses power and the brant will never complain.
This is of course assuming you have not killed the battery already or had it go
flat somewhere. Always best to replace it when starting get a bit laboured.
:)

earmuff man 29-01-2009 07:32 AM

I had RAC do a battery change over for me.

They put a small battery pack into the cig lighter and turned the key to accessories, then changed over the main battery. Worked fine.

werticusness 29-01-2009 01:31 PM

how can i tell if the brant is messing me around or not... it seems to behave exactly as it should except for the car not starting, there is no indication that the fuel cut solenoid is active or any other issue...

the only difference is i can hear a 'click' from the fuel pump but no pumping sound like i would normally hear as it pressurises.

fobz 29-01-2009 08:23 PM

When my Brant was "messing me around" as you say, it was obvious by the
lights on it that something was wrong. Generally the Brant will not let the car
crank on start, so if it is cranking then something else is wrong (and the
brant is probably ok).
Take it to Subaru. When you do find out exactly what is going on be sure
to post back here so we can all see the solution.
:)

Rexy03 29-01-2009 09:15 PM

the fuel pump relays inside the brant module may need resoldering
the joints go dry and the pump dont pump
easily fixed if you want to try..........

werticusness 29-01-2009 11:12 PM

yeah i have no problem checking for dry joints - where abouts is the brant module? (assumings its not the key pad itself?)

Rexy03 30-01-2009 02:37 PM

The brant control module is under the center console just below the radio on the left hand side - remove the glove box and you will see it
http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=5484
its secured with just one bolt
undo that and then you can pull it out enough to remove the cover to reveal the 3 relays (3 large black boxes) which require resoldering on the back side
if needed you can unplug the keypad harness which is the small telephone cable type plug

you may also have an ignition key barrel problem too
when the barrel becomes worn you get the same result
this is detected by wriggling the key around in the ignition untill it works

there is a patch cable available from subaru for this problem
"KEY INSERT SWITCH PATCH HARNESS SAA9003"

werticusness 03-02-2009 04:19 PM

Okay i tried jiggling the key and that didnt change anything.

I ran a 12v line directly to the fuel pump and the car starts just fine, so that proves there is nothing wrong with the pump.

the brant is behaving properly as far as i can tell, just that the pump never gets the power.

so likely it is the 3 relays rexy mentions however i cant find them :( So im going to take a photo of my car's under dash area to see if you can help me find it :P

Rexy03 03-02-2009 05:11 PM

Have you got a GC or GD model ?

werticusness 03-02-2009 05:54 PM

Rexy03 03-02-2009 06:10 PM

Ok
just getting some info off Rexnet for ya
stay tuned.............

thanks dude, here is picks of my under glove box area.

Rexy03 03-02-2009 06:22 PM

Nah its not in those pics
thats was for a GD model
one fella on rexnet reckons its above the radio where the storage compartment is ?

another possible is under the center console just beside the handbrake ?

slg 03-02-2009 07:07 PM

You could just trace the wiring from the keypad to find where it is hidden...

Mine was located on the drivers side, bolted to the brace that mounts the steering column, very close to the radio.

werticusness 03-02-2009 07:24 PM

okay ill trace the wiring, thanks guys.

Rexy03 03-02-2009 07:57 PM

mate check this lib site
it has a few pics showing the module and what the three relays look like
it will give you a good idea of where you need to touch up the solder joints
http://www.ozliberty.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10172
and note the warning
DO NOT UNPLUG THE MODULE AT ANY STAGE.
This may cause the alarm to require the mastercode.

although you can disconect the cable that runs to the keypad - I have done this....

werticusness 04-02-2009 11:08 AM

awesome, fixed :)

rexy was on the money. - that module is a piece of fking shit, the brant is total junk it was put together by children in a 3rd world country with no solder skills for sure

Rexy03 04-02-2009 05:56 PM

Haha good one mate - where was it located in the end ?

werticusness 05-02-2009 12:51 PM

above the left drivers knee on the gc8

RichX 05-02-2009 04:43 PM

Cheers for that, a good read, might inspect mine.

smerm07 23-07-2010 04:49 PM

I just had my battery changed by RAC. The guy connected the terminals to a small power supply while changing. the car now starts and the brant keypad flashes, but it does not need a code anymore, any ideas? It asked for the code when i tried to jump start it early today.

sagara0510 25-07-2010 12:02 AM

hey guys tried to start my wrx my05 this morning. put in the brant code, turned the key and the car wouldn't start. took the key out and tried again but all the warning lights just clicked on and off and the brant keypad wouldnt' light up anymore.

disconnected the car battery and reconnected it to see if that would restart the keypad. it worked but when i put in the PIN code, it no longer works. have i reset the PIN by accident?

battery is currently being charged by a battery charger plugged into AC. plan to connect it back up to the car tomorrow.

chances of it working? what happens if my PIN no longer works?

JDM_STYLE 25-07-2010 12:20 AM

Nah its just gone into "Valet mode".

I'll PM you about it now.
