Does anyone know much about the VF43.. Looking for a comparison between the VF34, VF35 and the VF43.. Pros and Cons.

What one would be the best upgrade. I have currently got a VF29 and wondering if there would be big gains with either of the above turbos.

...
VF29 BB, PZ18 ex.h/46.7mm c.h/7b c.w/0.63 A/R - JDM WRX MY99-00 V5/V6 STi
VF34 BB, PZ18 ex.h/47.9mm c.h/6+6b c.w/0.63 A/R - JDM V7/V8 STi RA Spec C
VF35 TB, PZ15 ex.h/47.9mm c.h/9b c.w/0.51 A/R - OZ/UK MY02-05 STi
VF43 TB, PZ18 ex.h/47.9mm c.h/9b c.w/0.63 A/R - OZ/US MY06-07 STi

VF34 Ball Bearing = good off boost response,
VF35/43 Thrust or Sleeve Bearing = big kick when on full boost which some love in a Turbo car / poorer off boost response compared to VF34

VF34/43 PZ18 exhaust housing which is bigger than the PZ15 on the VF35 meaning VF34/43 has more KW up top.
This is at the expense of the VF34 being on full boost some 200-300RPM later than the VF35. VF43 some 200-300RPM after the VF34 due to sleeved bearings.

Thrust or Sleeve Bearing Turbos can usually handle greater boost and temps as their bearing designs are superior.
Rally teams use them for this reason as it equates to less broken turbos per season.
Everyone looks at full boost / RPM thresholds for their Turbo, when they should be deciding on what the want from their WRX.

On the Track driving mostly above 3000 RPM there is no real difference to be had from a BB VF29/34 compared to a TB VF30/39/43 - both will be on full boost almost equally. Turbo life for the BB's would likely be an issue in the long run.

On the street a VF35 would be a great responsive Turbo. An even better one would be a BB VF34 with a smaller machined PZ15 exhaust housing put on it. Sacrifice top end KW for low down torque.

Thanks WRXTACY, In your opinion would it be worth me upgrading to the VF34. I can sell mine and pick up 34 and pay the difference of around $200. I really must decide today.

Jim621 21-04-2009 08:28 AM

WRXTACY, what cost would you be looking at to get VF34 converted to a P15 housing?

Kato 21-04-2009 08:36 AM

What? Swap out a VF43 for a VF34?

Spend $200 + tuning time for no gains. (They are basically the same turbo except the VF43 is a lot newer).

I meant swapping my current VF29 to a VF34 and paying the difference of around $200. I can do it today, just doing maximum research before i go ahead

WRXTASY 21-04-2009 09:09 AM

If its only $200 diff changeover then swap in the VF34 for a tad more midrange plus reliability if the VF34 is new.

$200 is cheap for reliability over the older turbo.

It would not be a big job though for a very responsive Turbo the end product.
