$10 000 first mod??

Hi i'm fairly new to the modding scene and only just got my first hi performance car (99 rex) and i tlked to a guy from C-red about modifications and he reckons that the first step should be replacing the gear box and drivetrain as it is prone to fukin up the moment i try to get any real hi-performance out of the car, i just wanted to see what the members opinions on this are ie how many of you have had the gearbox fall out and what limitations is the stock system got. in the future id like to be able to drop the clutch from standstill so how much would i have to spend to buy a heavy duty gearbox and drivetrain...the guy from C-red quoted me $10 000 which is almost as much as the car...-_-

BALISTC 06-06-2009 04:21 PM

Lol

Heres a hint... go to a workshop that specialises in Subarus, and you might get some better advice.

Voot 06-06-2009 04:30 PM

that would be the first step if u were going to rebuild the whole car and change everything

much more better way to spend 1/2 that and get some serious performace

go see the guys at All Star Garage they will sort u out

redlib 06-06-2009 04:30 PM

HAHAHAHA, Thats probably the funniest thing i have ever herd. Go talk to people at mms, they know what there talking about, when it comes to modding

Taktics 06-06-2009 04:33 PM

C-red fella is probably on crack. Go to MMS, ASG, Tenagah, they know what they are doing.

Voot 06-06-2009 04:36 PM

imagine that,
"hey guys got my first mod done, new box and drive train, so it could handle a BOV"

Elrico 06-06-2009 04:39 PM

Dont forget RMS aswel, shameless plug hehe. Ummm mate, there are plenty of people pushing 260-300hp with an ordinary gearbox. How about this, for 6k you can get a fuel pump, injectors, new computer, new turbo, different cooler, exhaust tuned and be pushing anywhere of 260hp at the hubs or more.

Or replace your gearbox, get absolutley no gain because technically theres no loss. Wait till your gearbox goes then go from there. In the mean time, like myself, do some research on the best choice of boxes for when/IF yours does decide to break.

Terry.Wrist 06-06-2009 04:39 PM

This has to be a joke

V3 RA 06-06-2009 04:40 PM

what are you going to use the car for?
circut work?
drags?
helis?
or do you want a street car with a bit of poke?

if the answer is helis, blow 10 g on drivetrain :D

MKVIGTI 06-06-2009 04:46 PM

Don't slam through the gear changes. Most boxes break on clumsy shifts not the launch. Replace when broken or if you intend to be really nasty to it.

Disclaimer: If you break your box on launch ignore previous comments.

P.S. Don't forget Race Torque.

haha

Elrico 06-06-2009 04:51 PM

Id proberly say your diff or clutch would go before breaking a gearset on a launch, i mean, its already engaged. Might end up with a shiney rear diff :P

V3 RA 06-06-2009 04:52 PM

if you had the extra 10 k plus the 15ish (estimate) you spent on your gc8 why wouldnt you buy something like this???

^^^^^^

$25000 and you get the rarity of 2 door, strong box and spec c motor etc etc
its a quick car and looks the biz too...chepaer to buy than build!

scoobygez 06-06-2009 05:19 PM

Smart money is on the 2 door :)

forgot 10k on a gearbox dude wait til it goes wrong on ya....

sMY00n 06-06-2009 05:25 PM

ride the clutch on the launch its cheaper to replace the clutch then the gear box or diffs imo hahaha

TopGear 06-06-2009 05:53 PM

Yea good point. If they don't touch them regularly it will take them twice as long to do any job so either costs way to much or they end up underchargeing hours.

Not worth their time and if it goes pop you'll be the first to bag them.

phizzle 06-06-2009 07:08 PM

Replace things as they break, not because someone from C-Red told you so. Yes the gearboxes have a reputation but that is because back in the day everyone was thrashing the bejesus out of them with scant regard to service life. Ask almost any production transmission to constantly take hard launches, flat shifts and general abuse and it will end in tears. It is just amplified by the AWD system which makes losing traction harder, or in other words puts the driveline under more load because there is no wheel slip. You'll find that if you install a full face organic clutch it will serve as a bit of a 'fuse' for when the going gets tough and will slip a bit, allowing you to keep the gear teeth out of the bottom of the case.

Save your money (ING Direct has a good interest rate at the mo) and let it accrue interest for awhile while you drive around in one of the best cars ever made.

Lol at shiny dif. And at the same time, not lol. =(

timboon 07-06-2009 01:25 AM

haha dw i dont have 10k which is y i was asking i think i should rephrase the question, how many of you have had there box drop? and will dropping the clutch fast track me to dropping my box? and whoever said i could get all that shit for 6k can u tell me who from? cos ive tlked to mms and allstar and they are quoting me 3500+ for the ecu and 2700+ for the turbo. anyway im aiming for roughly 300hp atw but im a student so it has to be piece by piece. i hav an exhaust and a pod already.

jkelaart 07-06-2009 01:35 AM

God dam that's an expensive ecu.

timboon 07-06-2009 02:07 AM

well its install & tune as well

trainwrex 07-06-2009 05:24 AM

Just put an exhaust on and leave it at that. GCs are an ageing model if u start tinkering with things something else is going to break. I've seen a stardard wrx break 2nd gear twice, by abuse (not me but my old car). So if u treat it badly it will break.

Just save ur money and buy an 03 sti which can be had for high 20s. Unbreakable box, strong engine and overall better car. If you start modding I can see that sort of coin going to fix it.

Just my 2cents

Elrico 07-06-2009 05:33 AM

Mate, just have a look around. Can pick up Hybrid FMIC kits for $650 off ebay, second hand vf35's/34s for a little over the thou mark. Injectors for about $400, fuel pumps $250, ECU's i picked up an apexi powerfc for $900 plus $200 for a z32 afm but this has since gone up in price. Shop around, think about stuff before buying them and it will take time to get there but i found its better to mod a bit at a time. This way there is more satisfaction with every piece of gear that goes on.
allstar and they are quoting me 3500+ for the ecu and 2700+ for the turbo.
Thats probably initial dyno time included.

Elrico 07-06-2009 08:55 AM

Just though, whilst saying a mod at a time is great for satisfaction, also saving up for a few mods such as headers, turbo and say an intake would be cheaper if you bought them all at once, and got them thrown on at once.

Year ago i believe i ended up doing a fuel pump, fmic, 650cc injectors, PowerFC with Z32 AFM with 1 tune and upped the boost. Cost me $4500 for all the mods including dyno time.

RICOCHET 07-06-2009 10:38 AM

why would you want to dump the clutch? In a wrx it wouldnt actually do anything but make the car bog and not go anywhere.

Voot 07-06-2009 10:39 AM

dump it at 6grand and it doesnt, like uve been shot out of a cannon

Serbaru 07-06-2009 01:41 PM

LIMITER LAUNCH :D

RICOCHET 07-06-2009 01:57 PM

Id bet you could get a far better launch by slipping the clutch a little rather than dumping it at 6g

MKVIGTI 07-06-2009 02:05 PM
Id bet you could get a far better launch by slipping the clutch a little rather than dumping it at 6g
I sit on about 4 grand and 1 light before dropping the clutch I tac the accelerator to the floor. Probably dropping the clutch at around 5g's but with full noise. Done 1* 1.655 & 2 very low 1.7 60 footers. Have to be doing something right.

timboon 07-06-2009 02:28 PM

see that sounds more like what i want to do lol what you driving? and have you had any problems with the box?

MKVIGTI 07-06-2009 02:50 PM

06 STi so is a bit stronger. But never had an issue with the MY98. Had it from 38000 to 83000km and drove it very enthusiastically but never abused it. Didn't used to launch the 98 though. Save the piggy for AHG or drags. Nice to it on the street.

Think the big thing is if you do it all the time your going to break stuff. Occasionally yes there is a chance things will break and you will wear things quicker but if your nice to it 99% of the time you should be fine.

Choose carefully if you do flog it on the street. Coarse bitumen gives heaps of grip and is very hard on the drive line. Motorplex is pretty slippery ( especially if you go through the puddle ) is much easier on things.

scoobygez 07-06-2009 02:54 PM

Just treat it with respect like any other car lol yeah sti 6 speed is slightly stronger than the 5 speed but they all break if pushed hard enough like any gearbox!!

If ya want a strong box/casing p1's had a honey comb type lining in em :) :)

Great for building a nice strong box.....

teejay 07-06-2009 03:33 PM
see that sounds more like what i want to do lol what you driving? and have you had any problems with the box?
I broke 5 boxes in my old car.

I NEVER broke them from copious limiter launches. They always died from ramming them threw 2-3 change.

Just be ever so slightly gentle and humane to the thing and they will live.

Once I worked that out my last box last for ages with 250 atw.

Kato 07-06-2009 05:13 PM

5 speed boxes are unbreakable. I tried to break mine so many times and failed.

MKVIGTI 07-06-2009 05:50 PM
5 speed boxes are unbreakable. I tried to break mine so many times and failed.
Yours was a newer 5 speed not the classic 5 speed which does seem to be a little less tough.

Not saying your doing anything wrong. Im saying that with a bit of a ride off the line there isnt going to be to much difference. Besides if your chasing quarter mile times, why bother trying to thrash a stock wrx down the quarter?

As for the 6 speed, they are almost bullet proof. You cant even begin to compare the 5 with the 6. I never broke my box slipping it off the line, the only time it broke was once it was in gear and I dropped the hammer down then bam....stripped it clean. As teejay said be kind and they should be good for 250kw.

7000rpm side step of the clutch = ET 13.58
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU40ZW6_b10&NR=1

5500rpm riding the clutch off the line = ET 13.39, the .4 reaction is shit (unlike Mr Crash's commentary) because I was trying to nail it as the revs were rising.
