Replacing Cam Wheel??
 

I need to replace one of my damaged cam wheels and I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to go about doing it. I can see it has an allen key bolt that holds it in place but when removed how do I get the new one to be positioned exactly the same as the previous one. I know it's critical to get the alignment correct so I want to see if anyone can give me any information to help me. Can anyone recommend a mechanic that will come out and do a small job like this. The engine is from a 00 STI

I havent taken one of these cam wheels off before; but usually any item that needs to be installed in a certain position like a cam wheel should have a woodruf key or spline so you cant muck up the alignment...

you may also need a puller to get the cam wheel off...
(you can get these from supercheap etc from as little as $25)

Its up to you but maybe it is just getting that mobile mechanic to do it for you.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it may have a spline and in that case I could tackle the job quite easily. I suppose i'll know once I see the replacement cam wheel. It will give me a better idea of how it slides over the cam shaft.

i havent taken one off a ej but i would say its just a single keyway, so theres only one direction it can go on.

All 4 cam wheels are different. (cant use wheels from left bank on right or inlet on exhaust etc)
They have a keyway on them so can only go on one way.
Take the rocker cover off the side you are working on. On the end of the cam inside the cover is a hex end where you can hold it with a spanner while to loosen and tighten the bolt to hold it on.

Or whack it in 5th, and get someone to hold their foot on the brake.

What Cory say is right though, all the individual gears can only go in one position/ on one camshaft. The tricky part is removing the timing belt without the gears moving when the 'tension' is released.
Mark everything, and ensure it all goes back the same way, and you shouldn't have any dramas.
