oil cooler vs aftermarket sump. which offers better protection on track.
would like some discussion in relation to which out of those 2 offer the best engine protection on a track.
oil cooler: keeps oil temperatures in check, adds slightly more oil capacity aftermarket sump: increased oil volume, protects against oil starvation what are options for aftermarket sump? would it worth modifying a stock sump to increase its capacity and adding say a cosworth baffle plate? |
Both ideally. If I had to pick one, it would be a baffled sump to keep the oil where it needs to be.

agreed. does your car have the factory oil/water heat exchanger? |
agreed.
does your car have the factory oil/water heat exchanger?
Diamond, right now its still a stock ej205 sump setup, being a my00 gc8 i am assuming it still has the factory oil/water heat exchanger. so what i need is a large capacity sump with baffles? Stace, are you running a accumulator in your car? would u say its a better setup then sump+baffles? (in terms of protecting engine against oil starvation) i am well aware that pushing a stockish ej205 on a track is tempting fate somewhat, but i am hoping with the right supporting equipment it should be able to survive more then one track outing |
Depends on what your going to do... you may not "need" either.. but yes, if your going to go for some insurance, a modified sump of some form may be a good bet.
Doesnt even need to have more capacity, just need to keep it in the right spots. |
TJ, more then anything else its insurance against the 'rattle of death'. Currently i dont plan to run with semi slicks, and i am not entering the car in competitions as such, pretty much just a 'track fun/track learnings' vehicle.

Good oil and a decent baffled sump will be fine..
|
I would avoid an oil cooler. I am pretty sure it is what let go in my engine to cause a good fire...
