Default Radar Detectors

I'm looking at Vector 990 and RX65. Did a search but didn't quite get much info from the forum.

Made a call and apparently the 990 is a 3-4 yrs old unit and RX65 is the new one.

What deters me from getting the RX65 is that the 990 is a international unit which I'm keen in testing it in Singapore.

Would like to know hows the fficiency for both units and whether anyone's tried them in foriegn countries.

I haven't tried them in other countries, but the RX65 is international as well (you can select which radar bands you wish to monitor).

The RX65 unit is an excellent unit and has served me well, however, there is a new Beltronics STi Driver radar detector coming out in January, which will superseed the RX65 (and you have got to love a detector called STi ).

I have had an LR a 990i and an RX65 the RX65 is the best detector I have ever owned. I cant believe how far it picks up speed cameras. The 990i was the biggest piece of shit I owned.

I've had very good results with both detectors, its all to do with placement of the unit. I find that high up (near the rear view mirror) gives much better Ka warnings, however laser alerts drops.

I figure that laser you really can't do much about (unless your crafty ) , so better to leave it high up so you have maximum coverage for Ka band stuff.

also newer firmware helps too.

I have the RX65 and it has NEVER missed a multanova... EVER !
Only problem is that its about a year old and has "service required"
flashing on it now. I need to get it recalibrated or some crap...
Don't let that put you off. The RX65 says it has something wrong, but
other detectors simply stop detecting. At least my RX65 says it has a problem
instead of others where you only find they have a fault when you get a ticket.

I also got it off ebay. Imported from USA, cost around $380 AUS and
that included the freight. Bargain.

Ah yes, STi, definitely looked into one of those. Might be keen in it but I'm quite interested in testing an International set so that I can bring it around. Gonna start doing a bit of research on the STi.

By the way am I able to manual program the RX65 for different country ?

Nah I won't be concerned about lasers coz apparently the cops aim at the plates so chances aren't too high that detectors are gonna pick it up. RX75 will be good for lasers but the time frame given for you to brake is minimal...

Cool. How did you end up getting it fixed ? Freight it back to USA at your own cost or have it serviced locally ?

$380 is a freaking good deal. RRP is about $690 pus minus at courousel I think. Do you set between city and highway or leave it on autoscan ? According to the manual autoscan eliminates false alarms etc without classifying a genuine radar as false alarm so I wonder if thats true.

I have not had the unit fixed yet. I have heard of people fixing themselves
so will let you know how I go. I rang the place here and they will NOT
fix it coz I did not buy it in Australia.

Interesting thing is this... The guy said RRP on RX65 is $900 and comes
with a 2 year warranty. I pointed out that if I buy 2 off ebay and they
last a year each, then I am still ahead by $140 bucks. He didn't have
much to say at that.

I leave mine on autoscan. I get falses on the K coz of automatic doors
and crap. I also get the odd false on multabova, so I just slow
down. The main thing is that it has never missed a real multanova.

For what its worth, I have also mounted mine up near the mirror and
hard-wired it for power. Keeps it out of sight for thieves and
the Ecilop (Police backwards).

If I can't fix mine I will buy another, and I will get it off ebay again coz
local price is just stupid. However I will wait as there is some
speculation that they may become illegal here early in the new year.
