clicking noise diagnostics
 

cutting straight to it, not sure what ive done wrong-

last night i removed and refitted an engine to an automatic impreza,

having never done this before (never ever worked on an automatic) ive just pulled the engine and refitted like i would a manual, having no idea what i was doing really:rolleyes: i didnt unbolt the torque converters from the wobble plates or anything like that...

anyhow, i [U]suspect[/U] ive knocked this clip out when i reassembled it all, and curious to know if this is a common amatuer mistake with automatics?

The first thing I thought was trans oil pump drive not engaged properly inside the converter.............I killed my vl v8 tri-matic that way..... lesson learned.

Is that circlip just there to stop the oil pump drive sleeve moving off the input shaft (or to keep the pump drive engaged to the pump turbine)?

The Traumatic I killed sounded horrible from the first start after being re-installed, the pump drive turbine inside the converter was hitting the stator vanes because the pump turbine was being pushed forward due to it not being located on it's drive splines properly.....cost me a new box & converter.....metal through both = my epic fail!

i think it just retains that sleeve against the input shaft, the wire clip is -tiny- and i'd have probably lost it if it wasnt for me wondering what the hell all this additional stuff was attached to the torque converter when i started pulling the engine out...

the noise seems to click then stop then click a bit more, no pattern or load, drive or no drive.

all the wheels spin on the hoist fine, and the torque converter works when i ride the brakes... just very curious to figure out what the noise is...

anyone got a quick procedure on proper removal of auto trans's from an impreza?

The torque converter will have a sprag bearing (one way clutch) in it too....it could be this making the noise.

Where did the circlip end up?

Never pull the converter out of the bell housing !

The converter & clip need to be lined up correctly , If I recall the clip holds the oil pump shaft from moving back and forth. This may be making the noise ?

i suspect thats the case,

what 'damage' can it do if it floats back and forth a little?

also, not sure how i would go about getting that sleeve back out if the clip has come undone?

next time undo the torque converter from the flexi plate :)

Where does the clicking noise come from. usually clips dont fall off easily. does the noise come from the bellhousing area?

yeah, noise appears to be around the bellhousing side,

check that the rubber bung hasnt fallen in the bell housing? check for loose bolts, bent flexi plate?

does the noise change under load?

Stace, the Subaru converters are a unique set up as the drive has to go a long distance past the front crownwheel to get to the pump. The tube thing is a drive extension and has to be set very carefully. Many people fugg it up, even experienced mechanics.
Unless you located the converter on the auto trans and rotated it to engage all 3 sets of splines and drive dogs, you have more than likely got something pretty nasty going on in there right now. If you had the converter hanging on the back of the engine on reassembly, you would be the first person in history to have sucessfully lined it all up.
That tube also has a teflon pressure seal on it like a piston ring, they often break if they bet bumped or misaligned, trans oil will leak past or blow out the rubber lip seal eventually. Changing the lip seal has little effect as the pressure shouldn't be in the tube if the teflon seal is intact. Ring me if you want me to talk you though it.
