Default Car will not start.

Ok long story short a mates car will not start. We have charged it over night, wont kick over. It makes the relay clicking noise but refuses to fire. If it is jump started it will fire up and continue to run so i dont think its the alternator. Thinking:

1) Battery has dropped a cell and is ka-put
2) Starter motor is cactus

Any other ideas?

Also, if it is the starter motor, the car is a MY99 gc8 AUTOMATIC....will we need a different starter motor to a manual if we do intend on swapping them over? If so whats the physical/serial difference?

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Bud,

Measure the battery voltage (car off) <10 volts (12v car battery is 6 x 2v cells) = dropped cell......

Measure voltage at the battery terminals with the car running >/= 13.8 volts = alternator A O.K.

99% Battery, had the same problem with my bug eye, battery showed full charge on the battery charger but it would only start with a jump no matter how long you left the charger on.

It needs new muffler bearings.

Definately the battery bud. And dont try telling us its your mates, we know you got an auto put in when the motor was out cos manuals are too hard for you. =)

My meters here if you want it.

Battery, had the same problem. Try a load test on your current battery.. Mine used to jump start, but never start by it self.

Open up the cells on the battery and see if they have much water left in them. Pretty common for a battery to get very hot and have the liquid vapourize away. If low top up with distilled water and get the car jumped again and run it for a half hour on a mini cruise or something. Cost an hour of time all up and a litre or so of water to try instead of $120+ for a new battery.

Or of course it could be shagged out and time to buy new anyway but a 5 minute check and he will know for sure.
