Default Quietening down my exhaust.

Hey everyone,

I've recently purchased a 02 STI and the exhaust is too loud for me. The mufflers are branded Super Cat (see Super Cat) so I assume the exhaust came from them too. Not being a named brand I don't know anything about them, It is 3" and mandrel bent but would the dump-pipe be any good? On my previous WRX I went for a MMS 3" Stainless TBE and was more than happy with the performance, note and loudness.

What are all the extra cat-looking things? My previous exhaust only had the hi-flow cat and the muffler. I thought one might be a hot-dog, this made me sad.

I was just hoping for some advice on what to do to quieten down the exhaust, I don't really want to replace the entire thing but will do it if there are performance gains to be had. Also, I still have the full STI TBE exhaust, could I use any part of it? It would be loud enough for me but I don't know whether the muffler would fit onto the 3" piping.

Searching for "Exhaust volume" found me this:
http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/showthre...exhaust+volume
As is mentioned in that thread, look into "varex" adjustable mufflers.

Thats a flex-joint, it allows the front part of othe exhaust to move with the engine, whilst the back section stays still (it wont shake on its mounts like some exhausts).

'super cat' will just be the cat convertor mate, if you have a cannon on the rear change it for an oval muffler as previosly said for volume control

Both the cat and the muffler are branded Super Cat, and they make full exhaust systems so I just drew the logical conclusion. Thanks everyone for the suggestions to change to an oval muffler, do you think it would be worthwhile getting a workshop to modify the STI muffler to join the 3" pipe or should I just buy a new one with a 3" entry?

Looking at the picture again, the cat is on the far left, then the flex joint, what is the widening of the exhaust on the far right?
