1999 WRX making wierd sound :(

morning all

last Wednesday i replaced the struts on my car - all went really well ... well worth the time and money :)

ok a few days after i replaced them i kinda sorted noticed a clunk clunk sound coming from what i think is the right (drivers) side when u slow down at the lights and sometimes when u take a corner ..

i popped the bonnet and reved the throttle body and couldn't hear any engine sounds that sounded out of place ..

i'm thinking something with the steering or CV joints or driveline :(

any thoughts ?

thanks guys

cheers

Justin

If its doing it at low speed and when turning corners, could very well be a CV joint.

yeh i was hopping that was the case .. and yes it seems to be a low speed .. and when i turn off the car it makes the sound as well (sometimes) - its strange (almost thinking engine mounts)

but when the engines running there is no signs of any problems with the engine so i'm ruling that at atm ..

thanks
when i turn off the car it makes the sound as well (sometimes) - its strange (almost thinking engine mounts)
That could be your engine shaking as it shuts down (soft, broken or loose engine mounts), and its causing something to hit or clunk against something else in your engine bay (FMIC piping is renowned for doing this).

It may or may not be related, but one step at a time. Best thing to do is to take your car to a workshop and show them the noise.. it won't cost you anything and you'll get a good diagnosis.

yeh the condition the struts were in (not my fault the way i brought it) .. wouldn't surprise me that the twisting and bouncing could of cracked of softened the mounts ...

yes i just booked her in on Wednesday to "driveline services" here in Mackay .. they all that kinda stuff :) so i'll get them to have a look up under the car and give it a good shake over .. might jack it up this after noon and had a look see for myself

thanks for your posts i'll keep you updated

thanks

its very common for GC8 struts to have 'sticktion' issues, its the only poor design flaw of the impreza, the geometry causes wear in a small area of the rear struts which sounds like loose mountings.

try swapping the struts over (left to right) at the rear, and see if the noise changes sides.

Mr.J 10-05-2010 08:23 AM

but there brand new struts .. would that still be the problem ?

and the sound is coming from the front ..

but yes the GC8 are 200kg (or there abouts lighter ) then the later models due to it's weaker frame - well so i read the other night ..

and now i think coz i have put on new stiffer struts the weakest leak is showing it's head ... where before when everything was soft it was ok .. --- well thats what i'm hopping

fingers crossed

some sets of dms40's new out of the box used to have the same issue, so i wouldnt discount it!

if the knocking is coming from the front, i'd be checking things like the swaybar mounts etc, engine mounts are quite obvious usually (get under the car and poke a crow bar around).

Mr.J 10-05-2010 08:44 AM

yeh if it stops raining this afternoon i'm going to climb under and have a look around

i'll keep u all posted

thanks

The other thing to check...if you have in in-guard CAI...the filter can bang against the body if the car is shaking at all (eg idle, shut down)...otherwise as said previously check that all the top and bottom securing nuts on the struts are TIGHT, then also check all the swaybar mounts.
