Default Oil leak - accumulation on jack plate

Hey all.

Under the car last night and noticed a bit of oil spray behind the crossmember, on the underside of the gearbox and undercarriage. Found a little pool on top of the jack plate. Car's been sitting level for a week. Had previously noted a burning oil smell once or twice.

Ideas on the likely culrprit? Thinking a turbo oil line perhaps? Cam/rocker gasket leaks not likely to accumulate on the jack plate. Otherwise rear main seal

Will degrease it all at first opportunity but always happy to get internet advice .

Had it parked in a blizzard (yes seriously) last week for 8 hours. Maybe the cold cracked a seal/gasket.

Speak to Doug @ STechnic, this sounds exactly the same as my oil leak - but I can't bloody remember what was wrong at the moment!

If it's coming out the bell housing could be rear main or the plate that covers where the gudgeon pin comes out

Half your luck being in a blizzard! Where were you? I've had my Subaru up to the doors in deep snow for days and never cracked anything.
Turbo drain is not a common source of oil leak. Power steering pump reservoir on early ones is a common leak, rocker covers leak onto the exhaust pretty regularly too. Rear mains and cam and crank seals don't leak as much as people think, it's often the cover at the back that Scott sugested. Best bet is as you mentioned, clean it thoroughly and go for a short drive and re-check it.

For the record and the folks at home......

Finally got a chance to get under it tonight. Still can't work out where the spray rearward of the crossmember might have originated but in any case it seems to have stopped. Maybe some spillage from last oil change but f$$$ knows how.

Did however locate a leak around the bottom of the driver's side rocker cover, which explains the burning smell (gasket is directly above manifold).*
Managed to get a spanner and socket onto the three bottom bolts and give them a tweek. See what comes of it over the next few weeks.

Dtrally, car was at Perisher. Think it hung around -7 all day. Might have been a bit harsh on the old girl! Have a pic to post up which is kinda cool but have nowhere to host it.

Cheers fellas.
