Gearbox Crunch
Hey guys,
I have been searching everywhere for the answer to my problem and still have not come up with an answer... As of recently my gearbox has been feeling a little bit off when going into 4th gear, it usually only does it when i put my foot down a fair way. Every other gear is completely fine, basically it just feels like a little crunch when going into 4th gear, it is nowhere near as smooth as going into any of they other gears. It still always goes into the gear and never pops out of gear or anything, it is just getting really annoying and would like to have the problem rectified as i plan on participating in some track days in the near future. It is a 2003 WRX with the standard 5sp man gearbox. I was wondering if anyone knows what is the problem, i was thinking possibly bushing, linkages or synchros... All input is very greatly appreciated. cheers rhys |
Have you inspected all the bushings & links?

I havnt yet, but if you think that is the problem then i will definently check that. I dont know a lot about them, do they just wear over time and how do i tell if they need to be replaced?? Sorry if i sound like i have no idea whats going on... |
Tried dropping the oil and go panning for shiny 'silver', gold?
Feels bad man =/ |
synchros could be on its way out
dump said oil and see if you see any metalic bits "smurf" oil aka red line may help with it |
Worn synchro.
Does it always happen if you're shifting up from 3rd to 4th around 4000rpm and beyond? |

I read elsewhere that redline gearbox oil can fix this.
Ive been having the same issue from 2nd to third when im shift over 4k. apparently the oil is lightweight and gets between the sychros and stops them from crunching on shifts, how true that is im not sure but im gonna try it out for myself next week. link here http://www.wrx.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?style=5&f=6&t=35370 Cheers Will |
The redline will mask the worn out synchro......For awhile.

Whats the cost of getting the synchros replaced?
