get a long screwdriver and put it as close to the pulley of the alternator, then do p/s, then aircon. if there is a bearing stuffed it will be very loud and making that howling/slight grinding noisy. If nothing there. time to pull timing cover off and a listen to the idler's and tensioners and water pump pulleys. usually the idlers go first. to do that belt comes of and just spin them quickly and it will be noisy.

Pretty simple job if you know how to do it......... But you're fuked if you do know how to re-time it lol.....

20 - 30 minutes lol....just to drain the coolant ,get the radiator out & crack the front crank bolt...

P.s the noise would be constant & vary with engine speed if it were the tensioner or idlers.

Does the noise vary with engine speed or road speed?

Search Subaru waterfall feature......

The noise doesn't vary with engine speed or road speed at all...

It happens at random times, only once did it increase with acceleration, but otherwise it happens when idle, when at the lights, while turning...

Thing is, when it was happening while accelerating, if i put on the brakes, it would stop... thats why I thought it would be a tyre problem, but it cant be if it happens in idle at times?

Vacuum leak.

Check the vacuum line between the brake booster & inlet manifold.

Checked Powersteering fluid level? If the pump is low it can pull air & make some god awful noises.

Car went in today, got it back, two new front discs, back ones machineheaded, and the breaks squeaking while driving is now fixed.

The handbreak had a bit of noise from it, which may have been the howling, and it was adjusted.

Accelerator pedal seems more stiff? But I prefer it that way, was very loose beforehand.

All in all its much better, and the howling noise is gone

Just a quick question, with new discs on the front tyres, am i expecting dust/smoke for the first few days when breaking?

And also, apparently my breaking will always sound like metal on metal due to the compound in the break pads, so I'm guessing the break pads are somewhat shit?

***BRAKE***

What **BRAKE** pads were fitted?

It was a **BRAKE** noise? yet you said the noise "doesn't vary with road speed".......HUH? Nonsensical.

Be gentle on the **BRAKES** for the first week, NO abs test stops Mkay?
