4th gear issue

Hi Guys,

had a search on the forum but could not find anything similar to the issue i am having.

When i am on the freeway at 100km/h in 5th, dropping gear into 4th at about 80km/h when taking an exit, it will not go into 4th. It is like the gear does not exist.

When i am driving normally though, 4th gear is fine, moving up from 3rd and down from 5th. Its only when doing say 80km/h or more in 5th.

any ideas? (gearbox oil was changed a few months back at the 100k service).

synchro?

what do you have to do to get it into 4th? ie pump the clutch a few times or anything like that? maybe your clutch fluid is low, but that would affect all your shifts i'd say.

I need to drop into neutral then pump the clutch and try 4th again, sometime it works sometime it doesn't. If not then i just slow down in neutral and then go into 3rd at about 50-60km/h.

when you shift are you double clutching? on my old car i had similar problems downshifting from worn syncros but double clutching with a blip of the throttle to rev match fixed the problem

no double clutch. it should just drop into 4th normally.

id say the synchro is worn, as said above, rev matching will help the gear to engage. How man km's has the box done?

101,000km on the box.

If the synchro was worn, wouldn't i be having issues all the time though on shift up/down to 4th?

I'm not 100% on how synchros work, i just know what they do :p A guru should provide some input, but for the record my bet is a synchro issue of some discription

Will it just not go into position?

Or does it grind if you force it in?

It will not go into position, although if i do put some strong force it will grind fairly loud. I have only done that once though, i just leave it in neutral now when it happens.
