hey
well i got my self 2001 forester and the person before that had it lost the key so now im stuck with one key that unlocks the car and starts it , but another key that is just a key, so wont start car only unlock. not really helpful does anyone know of places besides subaru that will cut a new key with a central locking system, or with out, that will start the car? reasons not going to Subaru for it is that im getting quotes for around 480-520 bucks! and i was quoted before around 290 but it was for a different car. thanks all |

why did you buy a car that couldnt start
Key cut and code was only around $350 for me at Wangara Subaru. The fact the car has central locking doesnt mean much, however if you want a key with lock/unlock buttons, I'd say the price you quoted would be about right. |

ok hang on
i got a car with one key, well two, but only one that starts the car (original key) and one cut so if i go to the beach or whatever i can take that one nd keep other in car. i dno why he got that one for. just wanted a cheaper one so i can have two keys that start the car |

Sounds like the second key came with a second hand or new replacement lock, possibly didn't want to get it coded either.

i had the same issue, but my car has an after market immobiliser so i didn't need the lock / unlock buttons.
There is a bootmaker / key cutter in the food court in West Perth (the West Centre on Hay st) who can cut and code the key so that it wil start your car. Price was $150. Got mine last week and it works perfectly. |

The 'cut' key has not been coded for the stock Subaru immobiliser. Hence why it will not start the car too. However I think this key would be useful if you locked your proper key in the car.
I'd say that the only place that can code a new key for you is Subaru... |

Other catch is you would have to buy the key genuine so you might as well just get subaru to code it for you unless you can get the key at trade price! The spare key we be most likely cut to only get inside the vehicle if you have locked yourself out! |

Code cut transponder key
basicly one key has a transponder which talks to the bcm and the other one is just a plain silca key or whatever, the plain key will only unlock the boot and the doors because it doesnt have the transponder to start, go to subaru and ask them for your codes i think ull need to provide your VIN Number, might cost you $20 dollars or so, i do this with people for holdens, and the sheet basicly makes the key work like brand new so it isnt duplicated with wear, and go to a local locksmith and give them the sheet of paper which would say the key code and the transponder code should only take 5-10 minutes and under $300
