Default Slipping clutch...how to diagnose?

Might seem like a stupid question but I've never experienced it before & I'm trying to troubleshoot some issues with a bad noise in my driveline (coming from near gearbox, metal rubbing noise, in gear just rolling along with 0% throttle). Had the clutch replaced 8 months ago & from what I remember there was no noise then but it has been louder lately. Last few weeks just driving around parking lots slowly I get a burnt clutch smell even though I'm not using it. I have a shudder/squeal from the flywheel as well which AFAIK is a separate issue but may be linked.

Anyway, spoke to ASG about it & they don't seem to think it has anything to do with the clutch, I'd be able to feel it slipping if it was...except I don't really know how to "feel" it slip?

Sometimes at higher rpm on little runs on my own private streets it feels slightly jerky which I had assumed was the Walbro being over 2 years old & ready to die.

Whats the best description for a slipping clutch?

Best way to check for slipping would be to pull the handbrake, put it into 3rd (or was it 5th) gear and try to take off. If the car doesn't stall but it revs, clutch is slipping.

If your foot is not on the clutch pedal.. the stinky clutch smell is a dead giveaway.

A way to test a slipping clutch is... Get into 4th gear. Start at low speed and nail the throttle. As you increase in speed and revs. usually a worn out clutch will present itself at maximum torque around 4000rpm. You would see the revs rise with no speed increase. and the smell also.

+1. 4th, bring up to 4k and then full gas.

Great.

Guess I'll drop the box oil & have a look what comes out.

As said previously, get the car in a high gear at low engine speed and floor it. As the boost builds and the mid range torque kicks in, keep an eye on your tacho. You won't miss a slipping clutch if you follow this procedure.

Regarding the smell, are you sure that there is no oil or fluid leaking onto the exhaust?

Turn the engine on.

Depress the clutch pedal and put the transmission in fourth gear.

Slowly let up on the clutch while stepping on the gas pedal.

If you are able to completely release the clutch pedal without the engine stalling (or the car moving), your clutch is history.

That wasn't a U-turn! It was two consecutive right hand turns.

The shuddering on clutch take-up is probably a sign that you've cooked it a bit in the last 8 months, leaving hot spots on the fly wheel. The smell is unusual if you can't feel any slip, as a slipping clutch is real easy to tell in cars like WRX's where the change from low torque to high torque happens very quickly - the engine revs will flair up much quicker than normal with no change in road speed. Does the metallic noise go if you dip the clutch pedal?? If so it may be the release bearing making the noise.
