Yo Sobo, funny this thread popped up...i went and saw Doug yesterday with a faint noise from the rear diff whilst going hard right....

Doug it's Thomas here....if it turns out to be a similar issue to mine and you happen to find a fix, can you let me know so i can come back?

To be honest the noise is probably very minimal compared to what Sobo is describing, but nevertheless its still a bit annoying....

There is an additive to reduce the clicking on plate LSD rear diffs. It does however reduce the 'bite' they have when you need them to lock in. It's always a compromise between good road manners and a racer that clicks, bangs and bucks whenever you turn.

Speaking of additives Dougie, Chrylser have a friction modifier that we have used for this very purpose. Not on Subies that much, mainly on Mazda3 MPS's and Hilux's. Its very effective, available from Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler dealerships.

To add some more information to the mix...

On the way to work this morning from cold start. None of this happens, admittedly I was in manual, but there was nothing at all, just a faint gripping sound. Even after 15-20 mins of freeway driving, then through town it didn't do it.

It seems once the car is heated up, 25+ day etc... the noise gets worse. In the cold, it's not as pronounced if at all!

Oil in the transmission and rear diff is the issue here?

Yeah. Would it also make a difference to replace the stock bushes? as well as some decent oil?

It's not so much it bothers me, it's that I didn't know what the hell the problem was, and when Subaru start talking about taking the whole drive line apart I can see them smiling from ear to ear with a ka-ching $$$ scenario. Especially since this has happened since I bought the car new in 07. Now it's out of warranty, they want to do something about it....

I would try changing the driveline fluids (gearbox and diff) with Castrol Syntrax, and add the friction modifier that I mentioned above or something similar. Try that.

Insert Cusco plated 1.5 way front diff and 2 way plated rear diff.

Learn2love the clunk as you car now handles like its on rails (until the rails bend )

$3k all up for that

I'll stick with stock, put the new oils and bushes in and just turn the stereo up more

If you have documentation to show that you reported the issue from new, and they have now acknowledged that there is a problem, you have grounds for warranty work to be carried out even though the time has expired.
I had a similar situation with a 1996 WRX back in the day. The car was always difficult to select reverse gear but they reckoned it was normal. When they pulled the box apart for an unrelated synchro 'upgrade' they tried to charge me $850 extra because the selector fork was bent and they claimed 'owner abuse'. I had documentation to show previous history of the fault so they had to cough up. (reluctantly)
