Heater reconnection

Ladies, gentleman, Tino,

Winter is upon us.

My car currently does not have a heater hooked up, apparently it was causing dramas before.

As a result, during night time and early morning. I am fucking freezing, especially if the car fogs up and I need to open the window.

Now this probably means Its either blocked or rooted.

Ive just spent 10 dumbfounding minuites wondering where the lines go into the firewall so I can shove a hose in to see if its blocked etc.

In summary - me retard, need help.
Further summary - if help, will reward.

In most cases, heaters are disconnected when the core inside the dash leaks. If you can find the hoses on the firewall, just hook up a garden hose and run it through, that way if it leaks, you don't get coolant in your interior.

As said, 99% chance that it leaks if disconnected. Dash out job to fix. I have done a few so ask away if you need tips on how to DIY.

I am truly retarded - where are the holes in the dash?

wrxfiend 25-05-2011 05:18 PM

from a google image search, I think they are driver side near brake booster. Not 100% tho

just thought, maybe core was removed, hence no connections?

Off the top of my head, on the rs there is one either side of the pitch rod.

teejay 25-05-2011 05:52 PM

Pitch rod?

What the hell is that!

jEstEr? 25-05-2011 05:59 PM

^ in GC its one either side of the Pitch mount on the firewall too. On GD I believe they are both pax side. The heating system is continuous flow, you can't just block it up or it fucks with your engine cooling (ask me how I know). If your current core is fucked it would likely be bypassed with a length of hose in front of the firewall. The feed should be from under the inlet manifold on the passenger head, and it joins back into the head crossover pipe under the manifold.

Once again, not super familiar with RS dashes, pretty sure in a GC you can do it with the dash in place but it would be a mirrion times easier with it out of the way

the gearbox mount that goes from the top of the gearbox to the firewall.
looks like a black plastic dong

Actually, I am pretty sure on the RS the pitch rod is metal. Looks similar to the pic Matt has posted still though...

teejay 25-05-2011 06:17 PM

Jester - it has been looped around - passanger side rear of engine.

Rossco 25-05-2011 06:17 PM

There's a metal pipe sticking through the fire wall each side of the pitch stopper mount.

If you're going to run a hose through it make sure that you don't crank the pressure too high.......

P.s don't forget to blow out as much water as you can afterwards, otherwise the plain water will cause the core to corrode quick smart!

S....H....O.....U.....L......D......have refreshed ha ha!!!

take to doug,
'douglas good sir do you have one of these I may purchase?'
...
profit (for doug)

teejay 25-05-2011 09:45 PM

Id like to check if the old one is fucked first.

Odds are high, but since Im not baller I dont want spend the cash unless needs be.

Habeeb88 25-06-2011 01:26 PM

I think my heater pipe cores have corroded away... Does anybody recommond or know where I can take it to get looked at and how much it will set me down?

Cheers.
Mick

Its a dash out job, and support beam, and then heater box apart, allow a day. its an integral part of the cooling system, not just for warming your feeties on a cold morning.
I can tell you they're around $600 new.
I'd be trying JWS or similar.
Usually, they block up and the car starts to overheat because with no flow through the core the thermostat won't open. Symptom's very similar to a blown head gasket, or jammed thermostat.

I've done Lib, GD, and GC heater cores.
Its quite time consuming.
In fact the heater core on my missus' 99 is leaking and I've been putting it off.

RichX 25-06-2011 05:58 PM

Sounds too hard. I say fuck it and pack yourself a hot water bottle on the way to work :D

teejay 25-06-2011 06:22 PM

Im probably just going to get 12v heater fans installed.

dtrally 25-06-2011 06:41 PM

Light a small fire under the dash Teejay? Or DIY stereo install, same-same!

teejay 25-06-2011 06:42 PM

It is an RS afterall - always teetering on the edge of driving the owner to burn it to the ground.
